“‘Chief Detective: The Beginning'” has confirmed its main cast lineup!

The new MBC drama, tentatively titled “‘Chief Detective: The Beginning'” (directed by Kim Sung Hoon, written by Kim Young Shin, creator Park Jae Beom, produced by Barunson Studio), serves as a prequel to the history of Korean detective stories, portraying the period from the advanced 1950s to the 1960s. Set in an era of chaos, the drama follows Park Young Han (played by Lee Je Hoon), a specialized detective in catching thieves, as he teams up with three unique colleagues. Together, they challenge the norms of corrupt power and become detectives for the people, unfolding a dynamic story.

This retro crime investigation drama depicts the romantic and cheerful side of analog detective work, utilizing innate senses, insight, and persistence to solve crimes without the common profiling techniques or CCTV technology. It promises a unique catharsis for the younger generation and offers a fresh source of nostalgia and excitement for those who remember the era of “Detective Park.”

With 880 episodes aired over 18 years and a peak viewership of over 70%, the original “Chief Detective” has undoubtedly earned its place as a national favorite. In line with its legendary status, a dedicated production team has gathered to recreate its magic. Director Kim Sung Hoon, known for films like “Confidential Assignment” and “Rampant,” takes the helm. The rising screenwriter Kim Young Shin, who developed dramas like “Intern Jang” and “Black Sun” for MBC’s drama IP development team, handles the script. Additionally, writer Park Jae Beom, known for dramas like “Chief Kim,” “Hot Stove League,” and “Vincenzo,” contributes as a creator, elevating the overall quality.

Lee Je Hoon portrays the young Park Young Han, previously brought to life by veteran actor Choi Bool Am, affectionately known as “Korea’s Columbo.” Young Detective Park is equipped with both resourcefulness and determination, known for never backing down and for his unconventional methods. He is the embodiment of righteousness, unshaken by external pressures, exhibiting a firmness and insight akin to iron horns.

Lee Dong Hwi transforms into Kim Sang Soon, a detective nicknamed “Crazy Dog” at the Jongnam Police Station, a place where one mistake can be the end of one’s career. Born into a poor family, Kim Sang Soon possesses nothing but determination and tenacity. His life takes a turn when he encounters the iron-willed Detective Park Young Han, who challenges corrupt powers.

The roles played by emerging actors Choi Woo Sung and Yoon Hyun Soo have also fueled high expectations. Choi Woo Sung portrays Cho Kyung Hwan, an ace rice cake shop worker with extraordinary strength who later becomes a prominent detective at Jongnam Police Station. He is an upright and courteous young man, but his gentle nature transforms into that of an unwavering and powerful figure, reminiscent of a bulldozer, when faced with injustice.

Yoon Hyun Soo takes on the role of Seo Ho Jung, a high-achieving elite with dreams of becoming a prosecutor, who later evolves into Jegal Ryang, the “Firebear of Jongnam Police Station.” Seo Ho Jung is smart, confident, and seemingly flawless but prone to irreparable mistakes due to his excessive self-assuredness. His character’s journey through challenging times and facing off against the robust Park Young Han is expected to be a compelling story arc.

The production team shared, “‘Chief Detective: The Beginning’ will not only depict how Detective Park and his colleagues form a team, but also bring a different kind of enjoyment to the fans who have been eagerly waiting for this drama. The anticipation lies in how the actors will portray the iconic detectives, presenting a fresh perspective compared to the original work.”

Scheduled for broadcast in 2024, the MBC drama “‘Chief Detective: The Beginning'” is highly anticipated by viewers.
