Following Lee Sun Kyun’s death, many eyes have focused on the police and their role in his death, thus, many have been criticizing the force for their handling of his case. Netizens also allege the police failed to protect him and colluded with the media to leak information about the investigation.

Due to this, chief of the National Police Agency, Yoon Hee-geun, held a press conference at the Cheongju Police Station in Chungcheongbuk-do to deny all the allegations and the criticism the police has received.

He said, “I do not agree that the police investigation was conducted incorrectly, leading to this result. If there are any issues with the investigation or media guidelines, we will review them and make necessary improvements.”

On the same day, Kim Hee-joong, the chief of the Incheon Police Agency, also held a press conference at the Incheon Police Agency, stating, “There was no request for the police to attend publicly or leak any investigation information, as claimed by some individuals.”

Chief Kim stated, “The investigation into the deceased was conducted based on specific reports, statements, and evidence, following legal procedures. During the first interrogation on October 28th, the deceased expressed the intention to make a statement at a later time, so a detailed investigation was not conducted. After the second interrogation on November 4th, it was determined that further investigation was necessary, so another interrogation was conducted on December 23rd. During the investigation, the defense requested that the investigation into the deceased’s allegations and additional investigation into the defamation case be concluded together. In order to fully hear the deceased’s statement, a lengthy investigation was conducted.”

He further stated, “The late-night investigation was conducted with the consent of the deceased and the participation of the defense. In addition, the defense participated in all investigation processes related to this case, including investigation, confiscation, and forensics, and the investigation was conducted in accordance with legal procedures, such as recording statements on video.” Chief Kim emphasized, “There was no request for the police to attend publicly or leak any investigation information, as claimed by some individuals.”

Earlier, actor Lee Sun Kyun underwent three rounds of police investigations on suspicion of drug use. Additionally, he was also being investigated for filing a complaint and merging the case with the allegation of being threatened and extorted by a madam A (29, female, in custody) at a Gangnam entertainment establishment, to which he allegedly paid over 300 million won.

However, during this process, the police have continuously failed to obtain sufficient evidence to prove Lee Sun Kyun’s drug use. Despite submitting hair samples, including head, leg, and armpit hair, for analysis by the National Forensic Service, no traces of drugs were detected. There was also no significant evidence found through mobile phone forensics.

On December 27, it was reported that a male in his 40s was found inside a car, later, police confirmed the identity of the person to be actor Lee Sun Kyun. Later, his agency also confirmed the unfortunate news and said the funeral would be held privately and only attended by close family and friends.

Lee Sun Kyun’s funeral hall is set up at Funeral Hall No. 1 of Seoul National University Hospital in Jongno-gu, where visitors from the film and entertainment industry continue to pay their respects for the second day. Lee’s wife, Jeon Hye Jin, and his two brothers and sister are present at the funeral hall. The funeral procession was held at 11 a.m. on this day. According to the funeral hall, Lee’s departure is scheduled for 12 p.m. on the 29th, and the burial site has been changed.
