G-Dragon, who has cleared himself from drug allegations, is starting anew!
On the morning of the 21st at 10 AM, a press conference was held at the Grand Ballroom of JW Marriott Hotel regarding G-Dragon’s drug allegations and future activities by his new agency. Galaxy Corporation officials attended the event, while G-Dragon did not.
After the expiration of his exclusive contract with YG in June, G-Dragon’s next destination was not clearly determined. There were rumors of his return to YG, but on the 20th, YG officially announced on their website, “G-Dragon was one of the artists representing our company, and all the time we spent together since Big Bang’s debut in 2006 was an honor. We sincerely wish him the best in his new start.”
Representing G-Dragon at the press conference, Director Jo Sung-hae stated, “G-Dragon has signed an exclusive contract with Galaxy Corporation. Kwon Ji-yong and Galaxy Corporation will go beyond a simple agency relationship and challenge things that have never been done before, beyond what they have been able to do as partners and companions.”
The theme of the press conference can be summarized into two main points. First, it addressed the dismissal of drug allegations against the artist G-Dragon and the follow-up actions related to it. Second, it discussed G-Dragon’s future activities as an artist. Regarding the dismissal of the drug allegations, G-Dragon’s agency emphasized that it was ultimately baseless and highlighted the impact of bias and stigmatization. He urged everyone to focus on the responsibilities they should fulfill together, rather than blaming and investigating individuals.
G-Dragon also expressed that there was no intention to assign blame to anyone regarding his future endeavors. In response to some claims that the investigation was excessive, he respected the procedures and results of the police as an investigative agency. He also stated that instead of blaming individuals, the focus should be on what can be done and what needs to be done. The agency requested the deletion and correction of malicious comments and posts regarding this incident by midnight on the 28th, offering an opportunity to rectify them. However, they clearly stated that there would be strong and strict measures taken without leniency following this deadline.
As a result of this incident, G-Dragon himself became more interested in the issues of stigma and drug problems. He decided to take more proactive actions. Although he couldn’t attend the press conference due to scheduling conflicts, he released a letter revealing his future plans. G-Dragon highlighted the alarming fact that the average number of drug offenders per year is over 20,000 and that the number of adolescent drug offenders is significantly increasing. He also mentioned that less than 500 people among them receive proper treatment, which saddened him.
He stated, “Therefore, I believe I should take action. I want to actively work towards eradicating and eliminating drugs for vulnerable and misguided youth. I have decided to establish a foundation to sincerely and continuously pursue this cause.” G-Dragon unveiled his plans to establish a foundation that will address social issues such as drug eradication, inequality, and injustice through music and art activities. The foundation will also provide support and opportunities to aspiring artists who lack opportunities, thereby nurturing the future generation.
Gdragon is also planning a comeback next year, he said, “In 2024, I will come back and fulfill my responsibilities as an artist and social responsibilities as well.” Lastly, Kwon Jiyong expressed gratitude towards YG, who has walked alongside him throughout his journey, and the fans who have embraced him with love even during difficult times. He also mentioned his intention to make the first donation in the name of the fans after establishing the foundation. Kwon Jiyong stated, “I hope you all finish 2023 well and join us in our footsteps towards a brighter society” and emphasized the message, “Let’s all love each other.” Galaxy Corporation also stated, “It was a truly challenging time, but it became an opportunity for us to become stronger. We were able to endure because of the unwavering support from our fans and many others. Starting with the establishment of the foundation, we hope that the small seeds we are sowing now will become the foundation for a lush forest. Galaxy Corporation and Kwon Jiyong are embarking on this journey as partners. Kwon Jiyong will make a comeback in 2024.”
