Taiwanese singer and actor Huang Weijin has apologized for making inappropriate comments to LE SSERAFIM, but criticism continues in his home country for the remarks.
Recently, LE SSERAFIM was invited as a guest on the Chinese Chuseok special program ‘Red and White Arts Awards’ broadcast on the 27th (local time). On this day, LE SSERAFIM tried to eat a sweet potato ball with bamboo skewers before the performance, and seeing this, Huang Weijin made remarks that suggested a sexual connotation. He said, “I want to insert into them down there…(pause) the fried sweet potato balls.”
On the scene, a fellow celebrity also pointed out Huang Weijin’s remarks, saying, “He made a slip of the tongue.” Huang Weijin also expressed confusion, explaining, “I wanted to have a meal with them. There was no other intention,” but criticism intensified as the video spread.
On the 28th of January, Huang Weijin posted on his SNS, “I made a statement that could be misunderstood by everyone, but the message I wanted to convey in my heart was, ‘I am happy to share my favorite idol and delicious food.'”
He explained further, “It was part of the show to let the members eat delicious food one by one, and when Yunjin said she would eat a sweet potato ball, I wanted to react instinctively. I didn’t want to make the eating process awkward,” posting a message containing an explanation and an apology.
In Chinese entertainment programs, there are sometimes jokes and comments that may cross the line, but criticism within the Chinese-speaking community has not subsided, especially because the comments were directed at a foreign girl group.
On Chinese social media platforms such as Weibo and Twitter, comments such as ” Huang Weijin has always been borderline with his remarks, and now he’s even saying such things to LE SSERAFIM. I’m really disappointed,” “It seems like he made a genuine slip of the tongue. He should bow down and sincerely apologize,” “It’s fortunate that LE SSERAFIM didn’t understand right away.
