Shinhwa’s Shin Hye Sung has been sentenced to 6 months in prison and 1 year probation for driving someone else’s car while intoxicated and refusing to take a breathalyzer test.
On April 20th, Judge Lee Min Ji of the 4th Criminal Division of the Seoul Eastern District Court held a sentencing hearing for Shin Hye Sung, who was charged with violating the Road Traffic Act and illegally using a car.
On this day, the judge sentenced Shin Hye Sung to six months in prison and one year of probation, saying, “We acknowledge all the facts of the prosecution and are recognized guilty based on the evidence presented.”
In October of last year, after Shin Hye Sung drank at a restaurant in Nonhyeon-dong, Gangnam-gu, Seoul, he got into the car of his acquaintance in a state of intoxication. At the time, a substitute driver drove, and the acquaintance first got off at their home in Sujeong-gu, Seongnam-si, Gyeonggi-do, and after Shin Hye Sung sent the substitute driver, he drove about 10 km to Tancheon 2nd Bridge, Songpa-gu, Seoul. He also refused to take a breathalyzer test from the police, who were dispatched after receiving a report.
On November 15 last year, the police sent Shin Hye Sung without detention on charges of violating the Road Traffic Act and illegally using a car. The prosecution, who took over his case, brought Shin Hye Sung to trial on February 14, applying the same charges.
At the decision trial held on the 6th, the prosecution asked Shin Hye Sung to be sentenced to two years in prison. At the time, Shin Hye Sung’s side acknowledged all of his charges. Shin Hye Sung’s lawyer said, “He is reflecting on his wrongdoing. He has been a singer for 25 years and has suffered from social phobia, depression, and panic disorder, so he stopped his broadcasting activities in 2021. During that time, he didn’t drink alcohol,” he said.
In his final statement, Shin Hye Sung cried, “I am sorry that I disappointed many people even though I had to show an exemplary appearance. I will reflect on myself so that this will never happen again.”
Shin Hye Sung was also charged with drunk driving in April 2007. At the time, Shin Hye Sung’s blood alcohol level was 0.097%, which was the level for his license suspension.
