Jung Joon Young Released From Prison After Serving Term For Gang Rape, Banned From Appearing On Broadcasting Stations
Singer Jung Joon Young (35) has been released on parole today.
On the morning of the 19th of March, Jung Joon Young was released from Mokpo Prison in Jeollanam-do after serving his sentence. Jung Joon Young, who covered his face with her mask and hat, is known to have left the scene without saying a word.
Jung Joon Young was accused of getting women drunk and sexually assaulting them in Gangwon Hongcheon in January 2016 and in Daegu in March of the same year, along with members of the so-called “Jung Joon-young group chat room” including Choi Jong Hoon and three more men. In addition, Jung Joon Young was also accused of sharing inappropriate videos of women he filmed in a group chat room from the end of 2015 (violation of the Sexual Violence Punishment Act).
In the first trial held on November 29, 2019, the court sentenced Jung Joon Young to six years in prison, 80 hours of sexual violence treatment program, and a 5-year employment ban at institutions related to children, adolescents, and disabled welfare facilities. However, Jung Joon Young and the other defendants appealed the verdict, and the prosecution also appealed. In the appellate trial, the court sentenced Jung Joon Young to five years in prison, 80 hours of sexual violence treatment program, and a 5-year employment ban at institutions related to children, adolescents, and disabled welfare facilities.
In September 2020, the Supreme Court rejected the appeals of the defendants and the prosecution, confirming the verdict of the second trial.
Jung Joon-young rose to fame in 2012 through Mnet’s “Superstar K4” and gained popularity by appearing in various entertainment programs. However, he announced that he would suspend all entertainment activities after the allegations of sexual assault surfaced. He’s also been banned from appearing on many of Korea’s broadcasting stations as a result of his sentencing.
