GOT7’s JB Explains How The Group Was Able To Retain All Copyright And Trademark Of Their Group, A First In The Kpop Industry
GOT7 has become one of the very few, if not the first, kpop groups to be able to transfer the trademark of their group from the agency to them at a record speed.
GOT7 has made their highly anticipated return as a full group since their departure from JYP today and fans have been talking about the trademark and copyright of their group being transferred to them for a couple of weeks now, they have finally addressed it.
Recently, fans shared screenshots of what appears to be documentation that confirms all trademark rights of GOT7 (which includes music/songs, music & record production & distribution, performances, etc.) have been transferred to Lim Jaebeom, Park Jinyoung, Choi Youngjae, Kim Yugyeom, Tuan, Mark Yien, Wang Jackson and Kunpimook Bhuwakul on May 12, 2022.
During the press conference of their comeback, JB thanked JYP’s CEO Jung Wook and J.Y Park for facilitating the transfer, he said,
“JYP’s CEO Jung Wook willingly decided to transfer the trademark rights of GOT7 and its units to us. I’ve heard there was no case where the trademark rights have been transferred so smoothly.
I want to say thank you to JYP CEO Jung Wook and Jin Young-hyung.”
Fans are happy to hear that the rights of GOT7 belong to the members and no one else.
In the past, there have been many cases where Kpop groups fought and lost in court the rights of their group names and discography. Most kpop groups, if they leave their agency, rarely get to keep their group name and everything they’ve worked hard for up until that point. Not to mention, even if they do win, its a tedious process that takes years to resolve in court, some groups decided to give up on that and start from the bottom again. GOT7 has become the first in the industry to be able to retain the copyright and trademark rights of their group so easily and so fast.
