The MBC Thursday drama “Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok Joo” starring Lee Sung Kyung and Nam Joo Hyuk, aired in 2016. It depicted a healing youth romance set in a sports university, revolving around Kim Bok-joo, a 20-year-old weightlifter who has only known weightlifting her entire life, as she experiences her first love like a storm.
An official from the MBC IP Strategy Team, who planned and carried out the webtoon service, stated, “As we are considering various ways to utilize MBC’s high-level existing IP, we decided to proceed with the webtoon adaptation of the drama original. Starting with the webtoon service for ‘Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok Joo,’ we plan to present a multi-faceted IP media mix strategy, including attempting webtoon adaptations of various genres and producing audio dramas, to create a circular structure of content consumption.”
