Cultural and artistic figures, centered around director Bong Joon Ho, will release a statement demanding action from the government, investigative authorities, and the media regarding the death of actor Lee Sun Kyun. Director Bong had previously worked with Lee Sun Kyun in the film “Parasite.”
The Cultural and Artistic Solidarity Association announced on the 9th of January that they will hold a press conference on the 12th at the Seoul Press Center, where they will release a statement titled “Demands of Cultural and Artistic Figures Facing the Death of the Late Actor Lee Sun Kyun.” The association consists of 29 cultural and artistic organizations, including the Korean Directors’ Guild and the Korean Screenwriters’ Association. They stated, “We share the sentiment that we must not allow such incidents to be repeated after facing the unfortunate death of actor Lee Sun Kyun on December 27th. We plan to demand a thorough investigation into the truth by investigative authorities, deletion of articles that do not serve the purpose of reporting, and revision of current laws to protect the human rights of cultural and artistic figures.”
Director Bong Joon Ho, director Lee Won-tae, singer Yoon Jong-shin, actor Choi Duk Moon, Go Young-jae, the president of the Korean Independent Film Association, and Choi Jung-hwa, the representative of the Korean Film Producers Association, are expected to attend the event.
Industry insiders are also showing their support for the press conference held by the Cultural and Artistic Solidarity Association. Originally, a Netflix series “The Bequeathed” production announcement was scheduled to take place at a hotel in Seoul’s Jung-gu at the same time, but Netflix decided to postpone the event. Netflix stated on this day, “Due to the announcement of the demands statement by cultural and artistic figures facing the death of actor Lee Sun Kyun, we have decided to change the timing of the event.”
Meanwhile, Lee Sun Kyun passed away on December 27th while under investigation by the police for drug use allegations.
