The Blue House Responds To Petition Demanding JTBC’s Upcoming Drama “Snowdrop” Not To Be Aired
The Blue House has responded to the petition where netizens demanded that the upcoming drama “Snowdrop” does not air.
Over 100,000 netizens signed a petition to cancel JTBC’s upcoming drama “snowdrop” starring Jung Hae In and Blackpink Jisoo.
The drama came under Fire for a variety of reasons, “Snowdrop” plot centers around the love story of a man named Im Soo Ho (to be played by Jung Hae In) who jumps into a women’s dormitory in 1987 covered in blood one day, a female student named Eun Young Cho (Jisoo) hides and heals him.
The issue with “Snowdrop” took a turn for the worse when parts of the synopsis of the drama began to circulate online and caused speculations that the drama might be trying to distort history. According to the online leaks, a male lead is a spy who infiltrates the activist movement and another male character is a team leader at the Agency for National Security Planning (NSP) but is described as being straightforward and fair.
The year its set in is very important in Korean history as it marks the year that led to the establishment of the present-day republic. The NIS (The Agency for National Security Planning) was part of the authoritarian regime at the time and killed and tortured students who participated in the movement.
In March, JTBC had released a brief statement that was met with heavy backlash, and then release a detailed statement to counter netizen arguments.
On July 28, the Blue House released a statement to address to petition that has garnered over 220,000 signatures. They also address SBS’s drama “Joseon Exorcist” which was canceled due to the mass of controversy that ensued after the drama aired its first episode, a petition was also started for that drama.
The statement refers to JTBC’s statement regarding “Snowdrop” which had stated that it does not attempt to glamorize certain parts of being a spy.
They also refer is Article 4 of the broadcasting act which guarantees the broadcasting stations freedom and Independence of broadcast programming. They further state that it is not possible to regulate or interfere with the broadcast programming without complying with the conditions as prescribed, they must be careful as it requires a careful approach in order not to infringe on the freedom of expression.
They also added that broadcast that undermined the public responsibility or violates regulations such as excessive Distortion of History requires deliberation by the Korean communication standard commission (KCSC).
They stated that over 5,000 complaints were filed for “Joseon Exorcist,” however, due to the delays in forming the members of the commission a review has not been carried out yet.
As soon as the committee is formed, they will set an agenda and discuss whether or not “Joseon Exorcist” has filed broadcasting regulations. Furthermore, the committee will review broadcasts and complaints submitted by viewers.
