Song Joong Ki has touched on his new Netflix movie “My Name is Loh Kiwan” in a recent interview!
On the 6th of March, at a café in Samcheong-dong, Seoul, an interview with Song Joong Ki was held.
“My Name is Loh Kiwan” is a story that depicts a North Korean defector who arrives in Belgium with his last hope in life, and a woman who has lost the reason for living, falling for each other. Song Joong Ki plays the role of Loh Kiwan, who heads to Belgium alone to be recognized as a refugee after defecting from North Korea.
Song Joong Ki once turned down an offer to appear in this film seven years ago. He said, “It’s been a long time since I first saw the script. I said I wanted to do it, but then I declined. The reason for that is similar to the negative reactions the film is receiving now. ‘Why do you fall in love here when you came all the way to Belgium to survive with the money earned from your mother’s sacrifice?’ I couldn’t empathize. If it were me, I would have been struggling with guilt. In the drama, there is also a line from senior actor Cho Hyun Chul that says ‘Is loving a luxury?’ I used to think the same way in the past. I couldn’t empathize. It was my mistake to agree and then decline.”
During the filming of the drama “Reborn Rich” which aired in 2022, Song Joong Ki received the script again. He said, “When I read it again, I could empathize. The script didn’t change much in terms of specific settings. The main storyline was similar. There was the mother’s last words in the drama, but Kiwan also wanted to survive, and if he survives, he would want to live well, and I think living well as a weak human being means living well with others. That’s love. I used to think that emotion was a luxury, but when I read it again, it looked beautiful. I must have aged. The script is the same, but my thoughts have changed.”
He also said, “A person’s thoughts can be different from what they used to be. What I felt at that time, my interests seemed to influence the choice of the script.”
“My Name is Loh Kiwan” was released on Netflix on the 1st.
