“Blood Free” revolves around the era of new artificial cultured meat in 2025 and follows the story of Yoon Ja-yoo (played by Han Hyo Joo), the CEO of the life engineering company BF, and her bodyguard, Woo Chae-woon (played by Ju Ji Hoon), a retired military officer who intentionally approaches her and gets involved in mysterious deaths and incidents, unraveling the truth behind the scenes.

This series marks the first time in South Korea’s TV series history that artificial cultured meat has been featured. Director Park Cheol-hwan, who directs the first drama featuring artificial cultured meat, emphasized the importance of direction, stating, “It’s not a distant future, but a near future, about 1-2 years ahead. I wanted it to look realistic without awkwardness. When we were filming, we didn’t even know AI would become a hot topic. I focused on expressing it as naturally as possible in real-life situations.”

Ju Ji Hoon plays the role of Woo Chae-woon, a former military officer who graduated from the Naval Academy and now serves as a bodyguard for BF Group CEO Yoon Ja-yoo. He described his character, saying, “Woo Chae-woon is a former military officer and current bodyguard. He becomes involved in various secret investigations while searching for the truth behind the incident where he was attacked during his service as a presidential bodyguard.”

Han Hyo Joo portrays Yoon Ja-yoo, the CEO of BF Group. She explained, “Yoon Ja-yoo is the CEO of the life engineering company BF. She is someone who is threatened by the risk of being in danger as she delves into the primary industry by researching cultured cells and creating cultured products. To protect herself, she hires a bodyguard, who happens to be Ju Ji Hoon. However, there is a continuing suspicion about whether he is only providing protection or if there is something more to him.”

Even when we talked privately, and when we exchanged acting, there was a sincere feeling. Thanks to her, I relied a lot on the set,” and Han Hyo Joo reciprocating, “I relied on Ju Ji Hoon too. He is not only an excellent actor on set but also views the set like a producer. He voices his opinions when there are problems on set or when he thinks something might happen. I’m very grateful and feel reassured to act alongside him.”

Lee Hee Joon expressed his excitement about portraying the character with the highest position. He said, “My status has risen. Every time I shoot scenes where I dine with the gods, I eat in a luxurious high-rise restaurant. The displayed whiskey was overwhelming. Every time I went there, I was amazed.”

Lee Moo Saeng plays On-san, Yoon Ja-yoo’s college classmate and one of the founding members of BF Group, serving as the chief responsible for cultured medium technology. Lee Moo Saeng admitted that acting with CG was challenging, saying, “There are scenes where I flail around in the air. It felt awkward and uncomfortable, but thankfully, the production team provided detailed explanations.”

He continued, “When they said, ‘We’ll take care of it with CG, so don’t worry,’ I felt relieved. Please pay attention to BF AI Secretary Jang Yeong-sil. He is an indispensable character in our drama. AI is the trend, isn’t it? Through ‘Blood Free,’ I think we can have a sneak peek at what the near future will look like.”
