Gyeongseong Creature” actor Park Seo Joon expressed his feelings of disappointment and sadness while accepting the mixed reviews he received.

Park Seo Joon, who played the protagonist Jang Tae-sang in the Netflix drama “Gyeongseong Creature” met with media outlet News1 on the afternoon of the 11th in Samcheong-dong, Seoul.

“Gyeongseong Creature” is a creature thriller that takes place in the darkest spring of 1945, when the darkness of the era was at its peak, where two youths who survived faced off against monsters born out of greed. Following the release of Season 1 Part 1, consisting of 7 episodes, on December 22nd last year, the remaining 3 episodes of Part 2 were released on the 5th.

Here are some lists of questions and answers from the interview:

– There have been various reactions to the character Jang Tae-sang.

▶ Some said that Jang Tae-sang was portrayed too lightly in the beginning. However, I couldn’t just think about the beginning. Since I had to portray the entire story up to Season 2, I had to show a lot of emotions and situations. The first shoot was a rookie who received electric torture, and I was the only one who had to reshoot. I felt a vague heaviness from being tortured. But at that time, the writer and director said that even though it was a difficult situation, they hoped that Tae-sang’s character would be shown through the acting, so that’s when I found my focus. I put a lot of thought into how much of Tae-sang’s witty side should be expressed.

-If you were to explain Jang Tae-sang’s transformation.

▶ It might sound abstract since I’m not talking in numbers, but what I thought was important was that even if it was exaggerated in the beginning, it had to be convincing in the end. In the beginning, some may think it’s different from their expectations, or they may think, “Could that have been possible in that era?” But I tried to express small changes delicately in each situation. I tried to think about the overall context.

– There were some reactions that Part 1 was disappointing, but the atmosphere changed to positive with the release of Part 2.

▶ There are times when I humbly accept it, but as a human, I get hurt. And when that happens, I distance myself. I think people can feel what is disappointing without even talking about it. Rather than rejecting criticism or such, I try to pay more attention to giving good words so that I don’t break down. It wasn’t my intention to release it in Part 1 and Part 2, but I’m really grateful for those who viewed it positively. There was a discussion between me, the director, and So-hee. There are good and disappointing aspects to dividing it into Part 1 and Part 2, but everything has its own preferences and regrets. But I think dividing it may have created expectations for Part 2. Those who watched “Gyeongseong Creature” probably wanted to see Part 2. There were people around me who said they would watch it when Part 2 came out.

– You said you ended up studying history as well.

▶ I ended up studying history again and had to search for things like what kind of words were used at that time. Although not many came up, it sparked my curiosity. I had to understand it in order to express it when reading the script. (Discovering historical facts) There were things I already knew, and there were things that shocked me.
