Gong Yoo’s Newest Drama “The Silent Sea” hasn’t lived up to expectations set by foreign media following the success of Squid Game, but why did this happen?

Netflix has dropped its last kdrama of 2021, “The Silent Sea,” on December 24. The drama features a star-studded cast consisting of Gong Yoo, Bae Doona, Lee Joon among many others. It was one of the most anticipated kdramas of 2021. It also notably marks Gong Yoo’s first drama since “Goblin” in 2016.

However, “The Silent Sea” has been met with many negative reviews by foreign media outlets. Notably, the SCMP called it ‘the worst Netflix show of the year,’ many user reviews were also negative citing the drama’s slow-paced and predictability as some of the reasons why they didn’t enjoy it.

When compared to “Squid Game” and “Hellbound,” “The Silent Sea” fails in comparison. The drama debuted at No. 7 on Netflix’s global TV category which is a stark contrast to how well-received “Squid Game” and “Hellbound” were when they first aired.

Netflix has not been able to make a significant box office hit since “Squid Game,” the platform was predicted to see an increase of 8.5 million paid subscribers in the 4th quarter of 2021, however, it doesn’t appear to be the case anymore.

“The Silent Sea” is the first-ever Sci-Fi (SF) drama in South Korea. It tells the story of the Republic of Korea Space Agency that sends a team to an abandoned research base on the moon to retrieve a sample, the sample could provide essential resources to earth that has lost most of its water.
