“The Midnight Studio” Ending Explained

“The Midnight Studio” has concluded its run earlier today, let us go through its finale and explain its ending!

“The Midnight Studio” episode 16 recap

The episode begins with a flashforward to a year later, Bom is working again as a lawyer and the studio is empty because Ki-Joo is not there anymore. She’s still waiting for him.

We go back to one year ago

Ki-Joo is searching on the black moon timing and he discovers in 10 days its happening and in another 3 years, so he decides to go to the netherworld to rid Bom from her curse.

He informs her of his decision and she does not accept it, she protests over and over again but he insists on going regardless.

Ji-Won gets hospitalized due to overwork so Go Sung-Ho decides to take revenge on Chief Kim. He goes to his mom, writes on his forehead and possesses his family members driving him crazy saying he should apologize and stop harassing his employees and abusing his power. Of course, he refuses, so Go Sung-Ho does not stop and continues to possess people at his work and eventually possess him and have him dressed in a sign that says he’s a terrible boss.

At night after Bom finishes caring for four dead teenagers, she gets a call and its Ki-Joo blanked out. He says he’s afraid of going to that world but he cannot live without her in this world, he must protect her and take the camera back.

She then decides to send off preparing as much as possible, he warns her since the day of the black moon has come, ghosts will be very scary and aggressive so she should be careful, he asks Go Sung-Ho to protect her.

He then goes to the forest and enters the world after battling a lot of ghosts. He then runs from more spirits and finds the cave, which was showing light, so he goes inside.

At the same time, ghosts attack the studio and attack Bom who runs away but they harass her and begin to strangle her.

As Ki-Joo enters the cave, he’s confronted by a huge presence who is not happy he’s there. He tells him he can still leave alive, but he has to take the camera, but if he keeps it here, she’ll live but he’ll never be able to leave this place. Ultimately, after some harsh exchange of words, he decides to keep the camera there and leave. But as he’s leaving the cave begins to crash and rocks fall. Eventually, he gets hurt and falls with the rocks hurting his head, he stays there not moving.

Meanwhile, the curse that is placed on Bom disappears but she realizes its possible that Ki-Joo is not coming back, she cries her eyes out.

1 year later

Sung-Ho and Ji-Won are still in love, communicating and happily dating, she’s also now in a higher position in her company and sticks to her allocated working hours.

Lee Hyun-Oh from the prosecutor office is sentenced to 15 years in jail, he screams and protests, but Bom is happy to see him receive punishment.

Sung-Ho now teaches ghosts how to possess and such. and Bom kept her boyfriend’s space as is waiting for his return.

Ki-Joo wakes up from his sleep, he’s awaken by a kid named Yoon Hae who tells him if he believes he’s alive then he is and if not, then he’s not. He guides him outside the world and onto the real world.

Ki-Joo finally reunites with Bom and she cries seeing him, they hug and kiss.

Final credits

Ki-Joo tells Bom she should rent out the space as he won’t return to photography for a while as he thinks about what to do. He says he wants to focus on her, he also gifts her a pair of shoes and says every steps she takes, she should think of him. They now begin seriously dating and being together.

The drama ends with Ki-Joo, bom, Ji-Won and Sung-Ho snapping photos together.
