Destined With You” aired its premiere episodes this week, let us discuss the drama’s premiere!

I watched the premiere, and I must say I enjoyed it a lot. Let us discuss the drama.

Note: this article is a first-impression review, it doesn’t mean this is the writer’s final thoughts on the drama. This is a spoiler review.

It seems to me that Rowoon has affinity for the fantasy genre, and I honestly don’t blame him. I see a lot of potential in that genre especially when combined with other genres. There is so much you can do from a writing standpoint as you’re not necessarily restricted by ‘general’ human rules so to speak. It also evokes excitement and curiosity.

The idea behind the drama is interesting albeit not particularly being anything unique, I am a sucker for good fantasy kdramas, always have been and will always be. As long as they’re enjoyable and have a degree of uniqueness to them, I will probably like it.

I didn’t expect the female lead to cast a spell but this pleasantly surprises me, it shows her in a more ‘humane’ light and it will definitely be a learning experience for her. Love coming from spells should hardly be called ‘love’ to begin with. Its forceful by nature.

It seems Hong-Jo has special abilities and is able to cast spells correctly or at least make sure they come to fruition. This is an interesting dilemma for her and Shin-Yu to figure out.

I didn’t like Shin-Yu as a character watching the premiere, I found him condescending and his remarks and jabs at her more so comes from having a higher standing place and feeling superior. Even when he’s supposedly defending his girlfriend, it more so feels like he’s simply trying to embarrass Hong Jo. I’m older now and such actions don’t make me swoon, they make me either cringe or furious. I am sure the screenwriter is building towards him realizing he sort of screwed up talking to her like that. He will be humbled, at least, I hope so. And I hope he apologizes too, those words were unnecessary and harsh.

Jo Bo Ah generally shares good chemistry with her co-stars. It doesn’t feel awkward when she’s around them which I appreciate, I know with seniority, age and such it might be difficult for Korean actors to get ‘comfortable’ on set immediately but I don’t sense that with her.

Many of my favorite sequences of the drama were Hong-Jo’s scenes. I felt so bad for her too. She’s the typical kdrama female lead in every aspect except for the casting spell one because these female leads are usually portrayed as ‘flawless’ even when all odds are against them and life treats them harshly, while unrealistic, I get it, you want to write nice female leads that audiences can sympathize with and root for. I was also intrigued by Shin-Yu and the hand that keeps touching his face.

According to the director, he’s very confident in his project and says he hopes for a JTBC reward vacation. I definitely see potential in this drama. The screenwriter who works on this drama worked on “100 Days My Prince,” so there is a lot of potential for good results here.

While the premiere was generally typical, I see potential, I hope it doesn’t disappoint.

So these are my thoughts on Destined With You, so what about you guys? did you like the episodes? let me know what you think in the comment section below.

  1. Hmm this drama , I like the story line but I find the female lead a beat annoying and pathetic. I usually like Jo Bo-ah’s dramas but from this character? I’m getting a lot of second hand embarrassment for her and I don’t think I can continue tbh . The path that her face gets red whenever she meets that kwon guy ? Pathetic! Ughh like girl pull yourself together you don’t have to make it so obvious, when he turned her down I felt so ashamed for her omg ! I turned my iPad off for like 10 mins before I could keep on watching to make everything worse casting a spell to make him fall in love with you ? Girl don’t you know your worth ?it was giving “I’m a desperate chick” Like you said a love that you had to go that far for isn’t love. She’s impulsive and I also don’t like that. Even that scene where she was telling si-yun that she’s lonely , I cringed sooo hardddd I know the writers tried to make her character cute, soft and all but I’m not digging it at alll , it’s not doing the job for me .Also why does she have to be such a pushover at work ? Like Gurl stand up for yourself or just do you work and go home besides you’re there to make money not befriend anyone, if they don’t like you that’s their business you don’t have to force it , dramas where people care bullied at work trigger me alot fr . I kinda like the male lead though but he’s a bit rude tooo and I kind of wanted Hong Jo to put him in his place but well she’s not so good at that . After episode 3 I’m gonna decide if I’m going to continue watching
