Director Kim Jin-min commented on actor Yoo Ah In in the drama “Goodbye Earth“.

Director Kim Jin-min, who directed the new drama “Goodbye Earth” met with Korean media outlet News 1 for an interview at a cafe in Seoul recently, he discussed various topics including Yoo Ah In.

Released on the 26th of last month, “Goodbye Earth” is a film adaptation of a Japanese novel of the same name. It depicts the story of people living together until the end in a world that has become chaotic due to the imminent end of the world with the collision of the Earth and an asteroid.

-This work required a lot of editing.

▶Let’s just say I edited it more than 20 times. Among the dramas I have done, this one was the most difficult and time-consuming to edit. I also learned a lot from the editing process. I remember sending off the editor, thinking and editing again the next day.

-How did you edit Yoo Ah In’s screen time after the drug controversy?

▶It didn’t deviate much from the original script length. I made some adjustments in certain parts. Some viewers may have had a sense of rejection due to various controversies, so I had to consider that as well. There are many characters, and if the role Yoo Ah In plays is missing, the story becomes unstable. I had to edit while maintaining respect for the viewers and not losing the direction of editing and storytelling.

-Have you contacted Yoo Ah In? The release of the work was also postponed due to the controversy.

▶We used to exchange messages, but not anymore. We’ll meet someday. He’s not a person without a sense of responsibility, so he conveyed (apologies) to me in various ways and even contacted me. Since it’s something that I can’t do anything about and he needs to sort it out himself, our position was to quietly observe.

-If you evaluate Yoo Ah In as an actor.

▶He is an excellent actor. When there was a new idea that I was struggling with as a director on set, I would honestly say to Yoo Ah In, “I don’t know how the actor should do this honestly.” Then, he would smile and say, “I’ll give it a try.” There were times when I realized that he is not just a star or an actor in scenes where he plays around. That’s when I thought, “So people want to work with this actor.”

-Given his extensive experience as an actor, Yoo Ah In must have had a significant role.

▶There are national actors like Kang Seok-woo and Cha Hwa-yeon, but not every work has well-known actors. There need to be more attractive points for viewers to watch. At that time, I heard that Yoo Ah In was very interested in works by writer Jung Sung-joon. I also thought that Ah In’s role could come alive even more depending on the actor playing Ahn Eun Jin’s character. I asked the CEO of the agency to let both actors participate. I think Ah In received a lot of help from Eun Jin in terms of how he interacted with her on set or his attitude towards her.
