Jang Geuk Suk has addressed his long hiatus in an interview ahead of Coupang Play’s upcoming drama “Bait” part 2!

On the morning of the 4th, the actor spoke to SportyBizNews in an interview at a cafe in Samcheong-dong, Seoul, where he shared his thoughts on finishing the drama “Bait.”

Regarding his comeback after five years, Jang Geuk Suk said, “It’s been 31 years since my debut. The five years that I rested were actually a good time for me, whether it was intentional or not.”

He laughed and said,

It was quite scary when some older ladies or people in restaurants would say, ‘Why aren’t you on TV these days?’ I didn’t know what to say. I spent two years in the military. When people asked why I wasn’t appearing, I would say ‘I’m a soldier,’ and for the remaining three years, I would explain that I had just finished my military service. I remember just saying ‘Oh, it’s nothing’ and trying to get out of the conversation quickly.”

Jang Geuk Suk, who felt that he was in the prime of his career, talked about how he spent five years without accepting any work proposals. He said, “I think the choices I make when I come back can determine my future path. So, I approached the decision seriously, and it took a long time.”

Meanwhile, he revealed,

I needed that time. I had never taken a break before and even looked back on myself for five years. I have seen myself for 30 years, and I did a lot rather than did well or worked hard. I thought it would be better to take a break now rather than later. It was not that I transformed into something else through the work ‘Bait,’ but rather I felt that there was ‘such a possibility’ and ‘I could entrust it enough.
Choosing ‘Bait’ was not solely because it was a genre piece. During the five-year break, I thought about what I could do in the area of zero base after becoming quite dry, with the Asian prince or sparkling image that had been on the surface all gone. When I thought about it, Bait was the quickest to catch my eye. The timing to express the rawness, where all the anxiety is gone and all the luggage is gone, was ‘Bait.”

In the Coupang Play drama “Bait” the story follows the people who track down ‘that guy,’ who committed the worst scam in history and disappeared after his death. Jang Geuk Suk played the role of Gu Do-han, the head of the powerful crime investigation team in this work. ‘Mickey’ premiered its first part on January 27th and will release its second part on the upcoming 7th of April.
