More developments in the HYBE-ADOR drama is here and this time, the parents are involved!

On the 13th of May, Ilgan Sports reported on the contents of an email sent by the parents of NewJeans to HYBE, in which they expressed concerns about the similarities and controversies between NewJeans and other girl groups that debuted under a different label within HYBE, including their concepts, styling, and choreography.

The parents of NewJeans stated that “There have already been numerous contents produced that bear similarities to NewJeans, and there are widespread suspicions of NewJeans copying and plagiarism from consumers. It is deeply regrettable that, just 1 year and 8 months after NewJeans’ debut, a team intentionally reminiscent of NewJeans’ debut period can be planned under a different label within the same parent company. BELIFT LAB, HYBE, do you not have any intention of protecting the brand value of NewJeans and its members?”

They also claimed that Bang Si Hyuk, the chairman of HYBE, did not acknowledge the greetings of NewJeans members. According to the parents, there were several occasions when the members came face to face with Bang Si Hyuk, but he pretended not to recognize them and ignored their greetings. They expressed their perplexity at the situation, stating that it happened multiple times in different places and on different dates, making it impossible for the members to not recognize NewJeans.

The parents further revealed their frustration, stating that they were dismayed by the immature and unbelievable situation, as the members, who were only middle and high school students, felt ignored or received the feeling of being deliberately avoided.

In addition, they mentioned that while NewJeans had signed a contract with HYBE with the promise of being their first girl group, another team debuted before them and they had to endure an indefinite wait without receiving any explanations. They expressed their difficulty in rebuilding the broken trust in HYBE as NewJeans’ legal representatives, stating that the continuous accusations of plagiarism caused by HYBE’s conduct and the subsequent marketing activities are hard to overcome.

In response to this HYBE issued a statement, they wrote,

Regarding the email that the parents of NewJeans reportedly sent to our company, we would like to provide an explanation.
Our company received the email on April 3rd and already responded on April 16th, stating that it was not plagiarism and addressing other points.
We would like to clarify that the claim that the ADOR situation started with “being mistreated, including not receiving greetings” is a one-sided argument and not a fact.
We deeply regret that Ms. Min has been involving artists and their families in his fight for his own greed.
We have gathered evidence that includes ▲the fact that sending emails attacking HYBE was part of a plan to seize management rights and pursue personal interests ▲Ms. Min suggested using his parents as a shield, claiming that if she raised the issue himself, it would violate the shareholder agreement ▲the email itself was not sent by his parents but was written by Vice President L and Ms. Min. We plan to submit this evidence to investigative and judicial authorities.
We cannot tolerate Ms. Min’s behavior of using artists and even their own parents as a shield for personal gain. We urge her to refrain from manipulating public opinion and to prioritize the protection of artist value.
