On January 27, Seungri’s trial was carried by the High Court for Armed Forces and the verdict is in.

Previously, on August 12 of 2021, the military court sentenced Seungri to three years in prison, fined him 1,156,900,000 won (about $994,544). He was fined on all nine charges brought against him. He denied all nine but one charge, the violation of the Foreign Exchange Transactions Act.

In the appeal trial, Seungri the justice department sentenced Seungri to one year and six months in prison, which is a reduced sentence.

But why the reduced sentence?

It appears to have been so because of Seungri changing his stance, he’s previously denied 8 of the nine charges against him, however, in this trial, he acknowledged all his charges in the appeal trial and conveyed his remorse.

Thus, he’s now charged with the violation of the Act on the Aggravated Punishment, etc. of Specific Economic Crimes, violation of the Food Sanitation Act, embezzlement, violation of the Act on Special Cases Concerning the Punishment, etc. of Sexual Crimes, habitual gambling, violation of the Foreign Exchange Transactions Act, prostitution mediation, purchase of prostitution services, and special violence instigation.

During the time when he was handed his sentence up until now, he was imprisoned in the ROK Military’s Correctional Institution, or the equivalent of military prison.

Following this trial, both the prosecution and Seungri didn’t appeal the decision, since he’s been serving for five months in the military prison, he will be released after serving one year and one month more of his sentence.
