Claudia Kim has shared details from the hard work that went into her character in Netflix’s “Gyeongseong Creature” in new interview!

During a Netflix “Gyeongseong Creature” Season 1 interview held on the 12th of January afternoon, Claudia Kim talked about her acting.

“Gyeongseong Creature” is a story that takes place in the darkest spring of 1945 when the darkness of the era was at its peak, where two youths who were solely focused on survival confront a monster born out of greed. Claudia Kim plays the role of Maeda Yukiko, a noble Japanese woman who holds immense power and wealth in the drama.

On this day, Claudia Kim expressed her thoughts on the public reception, saying, “I’m very happy because they told a lot of stories and gave a lot of compliments that resonated with me.” When asked about memorable reactions, she replied, “Of course, the reactions regarding the Japanese language were the most memorable. It was the part I was most nervous about. Surprisingly, there were many reactions about my somewhat unclear Korean. They said, ‘Thank goodness.'”

When asked about her character’s development, Claudia Kim said, “The director told me pretty much everything. Young Maeda would have relied on Seong-Sim (played by Kang Mal-geum) and had a special feeling. As she grew up, the distance between her and Korean and Japanese people increased, or maybe it was because of a person I liked. It seems like a relationship of fondness and longing.”

She added, “The most important thing to Maeda is power. Regaining control. That’s why I thought, ‘I can use the creature.'”

Claudia Kim attracted attention with her fluent Japanese dialect skills. She explained, “Even for simple Japanese lines, I had to practice at least three to five times (to get it right). I practiced at least two or three times a week, and I also practiced a lot over the phone. I had a lot of Japanese language lessons.”

She also revealed a behind-the-scenes story, saying, “First of all, I thought I couldn’t lose in terms of language (laughs). I’m a bit greedy when it comes to language. When I was given the task of learning Japanese, it seemed difficult, but I enjoy such challenges. Maybe it’s because there’s English, and I felt more favorable to speaking an Eastern language rather than a Western language. The Kyoto dialect was much more difficult than I expected. Should I say it was like singing? At first, I listened to the pronunciation of the Japanese language teacher and drew a picture on top of it. I studied while imitating it.”

Regarding her Japanese acting, she said, “I watched a lot of dramas. The image I had of Maeda didn’t match what I saw from the Japanese teachers. I even asked the Japanese teachers to record themselves speaking Korean. It was quite different. And I thought maybe Maeda would speak elegantly and softly. Before the overall reading, I asked the director about the tone during a private reading. I also did it on set, saying, ‘Shall we make it a bit stronger?'”

Claudia Kim expressed her affection for the drama, saying, “I watched it a lot and kept rewatching it. I felt like I could have spoken Japanese better. While shooting episode 9, I cried a lot, and even when watching it, my heart ached. It wasn’t just my part, there were lines that made me think a lot.”

“Gyeongseong Creature” Season 1 is available for streaming on Netflix.
