Actor Bae Sung Woo, who had previously been involved in a DUI incident, is returning to the industry with Netflix’s “The 8 Show.”

The production presentation for ‘The 8 Show’ was held at a hotel in Jung-gu, Seoul on the 10th of May. Director Han Jae Rim, as well as actors Ryu Jun Yeol, Chun Woo Hee, Park Jung Min, Lee Yeol Eum, Park Hae Joon, Lee Joo Young, Moon Jung Hee, and Bae Sung Woo attended the event and shared various stories.

‘The 8 Show’ is a Netflix series that depicts the story of 8 characters trapped in a secretive space divided into 8 floors, participating in a sweet but dangerous show where they earn money as time passes. It is a work adapted from the webtoons ‘Money Game’ and ‘Pai Game’ by author Bae Jin Soo, who recorded a cumulative view count of 300 million globally, with the themes of ‘politics’ and ‘economy’, depicting the primal desires of individuals conflicting in a capitalist society with director Han Jae Rim’s unique style.

The drama “The 8 Show” drew attention because Bae Sung Woo appeared at his first official event after causing controversy with drunk driving. He was caught for drunk driving in 2021. According to the police, the actor’s blood alcohol concentration at the time of the incident was above 0.08%, which is the level for license suspension.

On that day, before answering the reporters’ questions, Bae Sung Woo bowed his head in apology first. He said, “I think I should apologize. I disappointed the people who showed interest and encouragement. I wanted to apologize to everyone.” He continued, “Because of personal issues, I was in a situation where I could become a burden to the people I work with. I was very cautious, fearful, and sorry about it. ‘The 8 Show’ is a work that many people, including the director, actors, and production staff, made with their sweat and efforts. I tried my best not to be a burden to everyone involved in this work. Thank you for giving me the opportunity to apologize. I sincerely apologize.”

Director Han Jae-rim also explained the reason for casting Bae Sung Woo after the drunk driving controversy. He said, “I was considering who would suit this character, and it was my judgment as a director. If viewers can have empathy while being stable and diligent, and the actual personality of the voice actor is sincere, I thought hyung’s strengths stood out. Personally, I am close to him as a senior, and I hope his apology is conveyed well because I felt sorry for him, knowing he has been struggling.”
