“Today’s Webtoon” has premiered over the weekend, here are my thoughts on it.

Note: this article is a first-impression review, it doesn’t mean this is the writer’s final thoughts on the drama. This is a spoiler review.

The follow-up to the crazy ride that was “Why Her?” happened to be something that is quite timid in comparison.

If you guys don’t know, this Friday time slot for SBS has always been reserved for its best of the best projects, the projects that get people talking and usually dominate in the ratings battle. So it happens that this time, the genre for this time slot changed dramatically from something thats usually dark to something very light and heartwarming, and honestly… I like it.

I didn’t have high expectations going into “Today’s Webtoon” because its description was rather average and to be honest with you, the premiere was about as average as you’d expect from a kdrama with this theme and such topic, nonetheless, it was heartwarming.

You can rely on Sejeong to give an amazing energetic performance and she delivers here yet again. She’s the heart of the show and is perfectly cast here.

I thought the introductions were done well and were not too on the nose. Everybody gives an amazing performance as well. It was average in terms of pace too.

I have a feeling that “Today’s Webtoon” will be the type of heartwarming kdrama you see to basically regain some positive energy in your life, not something that will demand a great deal of attention. It also doesn’t appear to be the type that will be draining either. To those who enjoy bright kdramas about achieving dreams and being positive, this will probably be a god-send.

I think the chemistry between the cast members will be vital if the show wants to grab enough attention. In Sejeong’s last drama, her chemistry with Ahn Hyo Seop was off the charts, and while their drama was as cheesy as it gets and as cliché and repetitive as one can be, it managed to gain so much attention due to the chemistry between its cast. It will be interesting to see if this can be replicated here too.

Of course, its too early to judge because they’re only introductions thus far but we already see a bit of a lackluster reception on the Korean part. The drama’s ratings have fell to the 3% range with its second episode…. Which is…. not good news for SBS.

As I said in the beginning of the review, this time slot usually does exceptionally well and even when it doesn’t, it usually still pulls 6 to 10% in ratings, I haven’t seen 3% for this particular time slot on SBS in quite some time, I think for over a year if I am not mistaken.

Added to this, “Today’s Webtoon” will be 16 episodes…. While it is to be expected from this time slot, I still don’t think this is a good idea. I struggle to see how the 16 episodes will be properly filled with enough interesting content that justifies its its length.

So these are my thoughts on Today’s webtoon, so what about you guys? did you like the episodes? let me know what you thought in the comment section below.

  1. I really loved the first episodes, it is an adorable drama. All cast has amazing visuals. I watched the original Japanese drama and there was zero romance which I hated, so I really hope that this remake includes a love story. Kim Se Yeong has the same energy as Hwang Jung Eum, same style – I really like her. I really can’t comprehend why Korean audience doesn’t like it more and why it does not have better ratings: it is so well-made, the story is cute, the OST is lovely, what’s not to like? BTW, international audience loves it judging by the comments and ratings.
