YG Entertainment, home to artists like BLACKPINK and BABYMONSTER, has announced its intention to take legal action against the issue of deepfake videos involving its artists.

On the 2nd of September, YG Entertainment stated, “We are taking the situation of inappropriate deepfake videos being created and circulated concerning our artists very seriously. We are continuously monitoring these widespread and malicious illegal activities and are working to delete and block the illegal videos. We are also proceeding with all possible legal measures, including criminal procedures.”

The company added, “We will continue to respond firmly and strictly to all illegal activities that severely damage the dignity and reputation of our artists.”

Deepfake technology, which synthesizes images using artificial intelligence, has recently become a serious social issue, with illegal synthetic obscene photos and videos becoming widespread.

According to a report published by the cybersecurity firm ‘SecurityHero,’ the number of deepfake videos online last year reached 95,820, a 550% increase compared to 2019. Moreover, 98% of these deepfake videos were pornographic, with 99% of the victims being women.

Notably, Korean women in the entertainment industry, particularly singers, are the primary targets of deepfake pornography, with 95% of the individuals in these videos working in the entertainment industry, and 58% being singers.

Prior to YG Entertainment’s announcement, JYP Entertainment had also warned of strong legal action without leniency after pornographic videos using deepfake technology, featuring members of the girl group TWICE, began to spread.
