A 35-year-old female YouTuber, known as A, has been indicted for making videos that maliciously defamed member Jang Wonyoung of the idol group IVE and profited greatly from it.

On the 14th of May, the Incheon District Prosecutor’s Office’s Crime Department announced that they have charged YouTuber A, a 35-year-old woman, with defamation and insult under the Act on Promotion of Information and Communication Network Utilization and Information Protection.

A has been accused of posting false videos about seven famous celebrities and influencers, including Jang Wonyoung, on her channel Sojang from October 2021 to June last year, damaging their reputation.

In particular, A posted insulting videos about five of them 19 times, including insulting their appearance, and has also been charged with obstructing the business of their agencies.

It has been confirmed that she made an average monthly profit of about 10 million won [$7,313] through video posting. It was shocking to discover that someone who made videos insulting famous people without reason earned a total of 250 million won [over $180,000] through the channel.

Regarding Jang Wonyoung, A spread fake news such as “Jang Won-young ruined the debut of a fellow trainee out of jealousy” and “Other famous people also engaged in prostitution or plastic surgery.”

In response, Jang Wonyoung filed a lawsuit for damages against A, claiming that her honor was damaged by the continuous spread of false information. The court ruled in favor of the plaintiff, ordering A to pay 100 million won to Jang Wonyoung.

Meanwhile, the channel operated by A, Sojang, posted videos about malicious rumors regarding idols. The music industry has been calling for strict punishment against A, the operator of the channel. Currently, the channel has been deleted.
