The drama “Midnight Romance In Hagwon” starring actors Jung Ryeo Won and Wi Ha Joon, has sparked controversy with certain scenes, prompting criticism from the middle school teacher’s union.

On the 13th of May, the middle school teacher’s union expressed significant regret over the contents of the first episode of tvN’s weekend drama “Midnight Romance In Hagwon” which aired on the 11th. They stated, “The depiction and setting related to the ‘high school retest demand incident’ in the first episode of “Midnight Romance In Hagwon” on tvN’s weekend drama contained excessive dramatization, which could undermine the morale of teachers performing the mission of educating the generation growing up in public education and could give distorted views of the Korean public education system to viewers both domestically and internationally.”

Previously, in the first episode of “Midnight Romance In Hagwon” academy instructor Seo Hye-jin (played by Jung Ryeo Won) visits high school teacher Pyo Sang-seob (played by Kim Song Il) to raise objections to the exam questions and request a retest.

The middle school teacher’s union further criticized, “The intention of shedding light on the lives and love of people belonging to specific professions requires an excessive setting that could create misunderstandings about the public education scene and perpetuate dichotomous thinking [polarizing], failing to deeply reflect on the efforts and struggles of middle school teachers who strive to maintain the essence of the national curriculum even in difficult situations.”

The drama features dialogues such as “What if we get caught? What about the student records?” “If you think about it, don’t make a big deal out of it,” “It disappeared from the college entrance exam. Because it’s old,” “They won’t raise complaints strongly because of the student records,” and “Is it a problem to falsely claim authority using the student records held hostage?”

Furthermore, a male character, who is a high school teacher, physically intimidates the protagonist, insisting on his own perspective until he is cornered, calling her a “parasite.”

The middle school teacher’s union represents all middle school teachers nationwide, and they express hope that the remaining episodes of the drama will provide empathy, comfort, and meaningful catharsis to teachers responsible for public education, maintaining a positive and healthy influence as content not only domestically but also globally.
