Netizens have picked two Kpop groups they believe were ruined by their own companies, any guesses of who might be on the list?
In theory, Kpop companies would usually do their best to ensure their idols are properly promoted and cared for at the same time. In reality, that’s very rare and Kpop companies usually fall in one of those categories, and sometimes for unknown reasons, they don’t even go out of their way to promote their idol groups.
Today, we’re talking about the top two groups that are often brought up when the question ‘which kpop groups were ruined by their agencies?’ comes up.
At the height of their popularity, B.A.P gave EXO a run for their money, the two groups debuted in 2012 and B.A.P emerged as the black horses of the Kpop industry. They managed to win numerous rookie awards in 2012 and had established a solid local and international fandom.
The group tossed away many of people’s assumptions about Kpop and came out with bangers one after the other. That all came into a halt when in November 2014, news came out that the group had filed a lawsuit against their label to nullify their contract, claiming unfair working conditions and profit distribution.
Their agency, TS Entertainment, issued a press release denying their claims. B.A.P fired back with more proof of how poorly they were treated by their label. Things eventually went quiet and the group settled their lawsuit with TS Entertainment outside the court.
However, things were never the same after the news of the group’s lawsuit. Their popularity decreased immensely after the lawsuit and settlement. Fans had moved on to other groups that emerged around the time of B.A.P’s public fight against their label.
PRISTIN was considered one of the biggest rookie groups when they debuted in 2017. Many of the members competed in the first installment of the now-infamous Produce series. Nayoung and Kyulkyung became part of the final line-up for the project girl group I.O.I but later joined their group and debuted with them in 2017.
Their debut song “Weewoo” did well for a rookie girl group and the group became well known among both national and international Kpop fans as many named PRISTIN a group to be on the lookout for. They even won the rookie award at 2017’s MAMA.
However, things suddenly went quiet and the agency gave zero updates and the members rarely did any group activities or even post on V Live. Since 2018, fans had been demanding a response from Pledis Entertainment, fans demanded they give the group a comeback and promote them again.
In 2019, all fans lingering hopes of a possible PRISTIN return were crushed when Pledis announced that PRISTIN has officially disbanded. Pledis Entertainment announced that while Kyulkyung, Yehana, and Sungyeon would stay with the company, the remaining seven (Xiyeon, Rena, Roa, Kyla, Nayoung, Yuha, and Eunwoo) would be departing.
Fans still have no idea why it all happened the way it did. PRISTIN had a bright future ahead of them and could’ve been one of the biggest girl groups if Pledis had persisted and actually given them a chance. It’s been reported that PRISTIN members weren’t even aware of the group disbandment until the news was announced through media outlets.
What do you think of this list? Is there any group you’d like to add to it?
