One Of Korea’s Biggest Trot Singers Sentenced To Prison For Drunk Hit And Run
One of Korea’s biggest trot singers, Kim Ho Joong (33), who caused controversy with a ‘drunk hit-and-run,’ has ultimately received a prison sentence.
On the morning of the 13th of November, the Seoul Central District Court Criminal Division 26 (Judge Choi Min Hye) held the first trial sentencing for Kim Ho Joong, who faced charges of violating the Act on the Aggravated Punishment of Specific Crimes (injury by dangerous driving) and other charges.
Previously, in September, the prosecution had requested a sentence of 3 years and 6 months in prison for Kim Ho Joong. On this day, Judge Choi Min Hye sentenced him to 2 years and 6 months in prison, reducing the sentence by 1 year from the prosecution’s recommendation.
As the reason for the ruling, the court stated, ‘Despite causing property damage by hitting the victim’s taxi while driving under the influence, Kim Ho Joong irresponsibly fled and had his manager falsely turn himself in to the investigative authorities in his place. This caused confusion in the initial investigation and significantly wasted police resources.’
The court also noted, ‘When the manager went to turn himself in, Kim Ho Joong fled to a motel, leaving fabricated call logs in preparation for the investigation, and purchased beer before checking in. It is questionable whether, as an adult, he felt any remorse for his wrongdoing,’ adding, ‘Even though he was seen staggering from intoxication on CCTV, he continued to deny it with unconvincing excuses, showing poor behavior after the crime.’
However, the court explained the reduced sentence, stating, ‘He eventually acknowledged his crime and responsibility, and he reached an agreement with the victim by paying 60 million won.’
After receiving the verdict, Kim Ho Joong clasped his hands and bowed his head, letting out a small sigh immediately after the sentencing.
On May 9, Kim Ho Joong, after drinking, drove in Apgujeong-ro, Gangnam-gu, Seoul, crossed the centerline, collided with a taxi on the opposite road, and then fled the scene.
Meanwhile, Lee Kwang Deuk, CEO of Think Entertainment, and Director Jeon received sentences of 2 years and 1 year and 6 months, respectively, while Manager Jang received a 1-year sentence with 2 years of probation.
