More than 100,000 people gathered in Itaewon to celebrate the Halloween weekend on October 29, and due to a suspected overcrowding surge, many began to faint and many people died as a result of the incident.

The Prime minister of South Korea has since announced a national mourning period until November 5. Flags will be hoisted, and public officials and institution employees will wear ribbons. All non-urgent events will also be postponed as a result.
