HYBE has apologized for the controversy surrounding its industry review reports.
On October 29, HYBE CEO Lee Jae-sang posted an apology titled “Apology Regarding the Monitoring Document” on the official website.
Initially, HYBE’s document, which was disclosed during a National Assembly inspection, shocked numerous K-pop fans as it contained collections of negative comments about major agencies like SM Entertainment, JYP, their own idol groups and even smaller agency idols.
The following is the full statement from HYBE CEO Lee Jae-sang.
As HYBE CEO, I offer my apologies regarding the HYBE monitoring document. On October 24, during the National Assembly’s Culture, Sports, and Tourism Committee inspection, our monitoring document was criticized. I sincerely apologize to the artists, industry colleagues, and fans. The document was compiled retrospectively to capture various responses and opinions on industry trends and issues. It was shared exclusively with certain leadership members to gauge market and fan sentiment, but the content was highly inappropriate. Provocative and harsh expressions toward K-pop artists were included, personal views and evaluations from the writer were added, and the information was left in a written format. I acknowledge all faults on behalf of the company and feel responsible. I am especially sorry and heartbroken for the misunderstandings and harm caused by suspicions of reverse marketing that are entirely unfounded. I formally and sincerely apologize to the external artists mentioned in the document who have suffered harm and distress. We are contacting each agency separately to apologize directly. Additionally, we sincerely apologize to all HYBE music group artists facing criticism due to this matter. I acknowledge the leadership’s lack of awareness regarding the issue of sharing this document, and as CEO, I have immediately halted the creation of such monitoring documents. I promise to establish guidelines and strengthen internal controls to prevent such issues from arising again. Once again, I apologize to the artists, industry colleagues, fans, and everyone who loves and supports K-pop who have been hurt by this incident. As the company’s representative, I commit to thoroughly correcting past mistakes and making every effort for the healthy development of the K-pop industry, prioritizing the rights of all K-pop artists and the respect of fans above all else.
