Former Wonder Girls member Sunye has expressed her thoughts on being a married idol and how the prejudice regarding dating and marriage of idols should end now and more.
On March 23, the sixth episode “Outside the Box,” which shows lightened and shaded points of K-pop from various angles, was released in the original documentary “K-pop Generation.”
In the broadcast, Sunye, who returned as a married idol, and her best friend 2AM’s Jo Kwon, expressed their honest views on the things prohibited for idols, especially dating, and marriage. Jo Kwon introduced himself by saying, “I’m a second-generation idol. I’m still an idol.” In response, Sunye laughed, saying, “I actually became the greatest traitor because I got married while being an active idol.”
However, Jo Kwon stressed, “You broke the mold. Sunye broke something like a mold in that box and came out of it. In a way, you can say that married people can’t be idols. But I think it was Sunye who broke that mold.”
Jo Kwon also said, “Idol seems to be one of the processes of becoming an artist and an icon in the end.” Sunye also added, “That’s right. I wanted to tell you this story. Many people say that idols usually last for six to seven years, so after that aren’t you going to stop being a singer?” In response, Jo Kwon commented, “I hope we can break the prejudice that only teenagers can be idols now.”
Sunye said, “Of course, I’m a lucky person in a way. I’m doing what I like again. But there’s carefully still a restriction to work after getting married. Despite that I’m married and I can work again. There may be idols who come back after getting married like me. I hope you all will think about it more openly.”
