According to journalist Kang Kyung-yoon, late KARA member Goo Hara played a crucial role in the Burning Sun scandal coverage.

On the 19th of May, BBC News Korea released a documentary titled “Burning Sun: Exposing the secret K-pop chat groups.”

The video contained stories about BIGBANG’s former member Seungri, singer Jung Joon Young who was involved in illegal filming and distribution in the so-called “Jung Joon-young chatroom”, and former FTIsland’s Choi Jong Hoon.

During the coverage of the Burning Sun scandal, journalist Kang Kyung-yoon revealed in an interview that she confirmed the existence of high-ranking police officers in the chatroom involving Seungri, Jung Joon Young, and Choi Jong Hoon. She stated, “The chat logs revealed major issues of sexual crimes, police collusion, and those were the most crucial and unresolved problems. I wanted to know who the police officers mentioned in the chatroom were, but there was no way to find out. Goo Hara appeared and broke the silence. She contacted me first and said she wanted to help. She was very close to Choi Jong Hoon since their debut, and she also knew Seungri and Jung Joon Young to some extent. She had seen their conversations on their phones before and said, ‘There are really suspicious things happening there. What you said is true.'”

Kang continued, “To be honest, I wanted to know about the police officers, but I had no way of finding out. So, Hara asked if she could help with that. She called Choi Jong Hoon and asked him on my behalf.”

According to Goo Hara’s older brother Goo Ho-in, she personally called Choi Jong Hoon and persuaded him to reveal the information to the journalist. Thanks to that, Kang was able to find out that the person mentioned as the “Police Commissioner” in the chatroom was Yoon Gyu-geun, who was a deputy police chief.

Kang said, “Goo Hara was a very courageous woman. She told me, ‘I’m also a revenge porn victim.'”

Goo Ho-in shared that Hara’s ex-boyfriend had blackmailed her with illegal private videos, threatening to end her career. She reportedly begged him to stop, fearing for her career and public exposure.

Hara reported her ex-boyfriend to the police, and he was ultimately convicted of assault and blackmail. However, Hara struggled with depression and passed away in 2019.

Seungri was convicted by the Supreme Court in May 2022 on nine charges, including habitual gambling, prostitution, and procuring prostitution. He was sentenced to 1.5 years in prison and was released in February last year after serving his sentence.

Jung Joon Young was convicted for gang rape of intoxicated women in Hongcheon, Gangwon Province, in January 2016 and Daegu in March 2016, along with Choi Jong Hoon. He was also convicted for distributing illegal footage in the chat room. In September 2020, the Supreme Court sentenced him to five years in prison, and he was released in March this year after serving his full sentence.

Choi Jong Hoon completed his 2.5-year prison sentence and was released in November 2021.
