The Korean entertainment industry has many hidden gems and many amazingly talented Korean actors who are yet to gain the attention they deserve overseas.

Today, we’re going to talk about some Korean actors who found success in South Korea but are yet to be recognized properly within the international kdrama community.

Note: this isn’t a comprehensive list. If you have an actor you’d like to add please let me know in the comment section below.

Lee Je Hoon

Lee Je Hoon is a talented actor who is also drop-dead gorgeous. Despite his amazing acting skills, he’s yet to gain the level of recognition he deserves among international kdrama fans.

The reason for his lack of popularity overseas could be due to the fact that he focuses mostly on movies and takes his time in between drama productions. Many international fans prefer watching dramas to movies.

Lee Je Hoon gained fans when he led the immensely popular series “Signal” and also gained many international fans when he starred opposite Shin Min Ah in “Tomorrow With You.” He’s underrated and often overlooked when international fans discuss their favorite Korean actors.

Joo Won

You might be surprised to see him on this list because he’s known within the kdrama community, but it still feels like Joo Won isn’t getting the same amount of recognition as his peers despite his killer acting skills.

The reason behind it could be that he never really targeted the type of kdramas the international community is attracted to. He gained recognition for his acting in “Good Doctor” and “Yongpal” but still hasn’t reached the level of success or recognition he deserves overseas.

Choi Woo Sik

Choi Woo Sik is one of my personal favorite Korean actors of all time, I am always sad to see that he’s not getting the attention he deserves overseas or in South Korea, that is until recently. It’s definitely changing especially after his role in the Oscar-winning film “Parasite.”

Choi Woo Sik is known among kpop and kdrama fans as Park Seo Joon and BTS V friend. He’s been acting since 2011 but has mostly played supporting roles.

Choi Woo Sik is a versatile actor who can pull off the bad boy image and the good image with ease. It’s sad to know he still hasn’t led his own drama despite his amazing acting skills.

He’s currently focusing on movies and in fact, has an upcoming movie alongside Lee Je Hoon that is set to be released later this February. He’s definitely worth checking out, hopefully, he gets the chance to lead his own drama in the near future.

Yoo Ah In

Yoo Ah In is considered one of the best Korean actors in South Korea, many Koreans; whether they love or hate his character; would agree with this statement. Despite his controversial image and often misunderstood social media posts, he managed to attract a lot of attention when he played the bad guy role in the immensely popular movie “Veteran.”

His acting is often the center of attention; he fully immerses himself in his roles and often plays interesting complex characters that many actors around his age would usually avoid.

Just like Lee Je Hoon, Yoo Ah In focuses more on movies. He started out acting in dramas since 2003 but focused on movies since 2010. He gained many international fans through the historical drama “Sungkyunkwan Scandal” playing Song Joong Ki’s character best friend, but his other drama projects found varying levels of success since then.

These are only some of the Korean actors I believe deserve more attention from the international kdrama community. Do you guys agree with me? Who would you want to add to this list?

  1. I think shin hyesun also deserves more attention from international fan. She is such a great actor. She has approached me with various emotions and the character she played in my golden life and angel’s last mission really showed her capabilities to the extent that i thought those character as her own and she really deserved the top excellence award she won in 2019

  2. Ryu Junyeol may also be added to your list. Perhaps the reason why he isn’t very famous overseas is that he only has one drama that really rose to popularity which is Reply 1988. And just like his Lee Je Hoon Hyung, he also prefers doing movies, and even gained acting awards through them.

I just wish that more international fans would also notice how talented and charming he is, not for popularity’s sake but for his voice as an advocate (environmentalist) to be heard louder.
