“The World Of The Married” A Terrific Start… To Another JTBC Hit?- Episode 1 And 2 Review
JTBC newly premiered drama “The World Of The Married” is already making waves for its splendid start, k-netizens are raving about the new JTBC drama and it looks like JTBC has another hit on their hands.
“The World Of The Married” is airing on the same time slot as the massively successful JTBC drama “Itaewon Class,” its safe to say it has to work hard to fill the same void left by what’s now considered to be one of the biggest kdramas of 2020.
I’ve seen the premiere of “The World Of The Married” and decided to share my thoughts on the first and second episode and I have a lot of nice things to say.
I love actress Kim Hee Ae, the last drama I watched of her was “Secret Love Affair” with Yoo Ah In, she played a character of someone who cheats on her husband. It was an intense and beautiful drama about the subject of marital affairs. I really liked everything about that drama.
Kim Hee Ae chooses great projects, I think we can all agree on that and it looks like this project will be a massive success. The second episode of “The World Of The Married” has surpassed the 10% in ratings, this is HUGE. We’re only at episode 2 and it has already achieved double digits. In comparison, it took “Itaewon Class” 5 episodes to break through the 10% in ratings, if they keep up the good work, we could be looking at 20% within 6 more episodes.
“The World Of The Married” is about a woman who finds out that her husband is cheating on her, she leads a happy life and one day all of that comes crashing down.
This particular subject isn’t anything special, it actually reminds me of the hit drama “VIP” of 2019 by Jang Nara, only this time, the female lead has even more to lose. “The World Of The Married” is based on the British series “Doctor Foster.”
For the record, I have never seen that series so I will be judging “The World Of The Married” solely on its script and actors’ performances without taking into account how close to the original it is.
Each episode is around 1 hour and 15 minutes and that’s difficult to fill sometimes but its done so tastefully. “The World Of The Married” manages to suck you into the world of the elite Korean society in mere minutes.
“The World Of The Married” made headlines for switching to a 19+ rating for the first half of its run, I don’t mind such dramas and I found it adequately used here, not done to provoke anyone but to realistically portray married life. Some might find it a bit too excessive especially for a kdrama which is totally understandable. I know a lot of people watch kdramas because they generally tend to be more PG and less sexual, so it might not be for you.
“The World Of The Married” needs such a rating in order to properly convey the raw emotions married couples experience, I would’ve been very annoyed and slightly disappointed if I felt that the PD was holding back, thankfully, he’s not doing that.
“The World Of The Married” immediately made me hate and love certain characters, as said before, the script could be described as the ‘typical marital affairs’ type of script but it seems to have a lot of hidden cards in its hands and that was a lot of fun to see. The fact that her friends were in on it makes my blood boil as if I am being cheated on. I was really invested watching the premiere of “The World Of The Married” and it didn’t feel long at all. The twists and turns plus the realistic portrayal made it more fun to watch.
I must admit I am a sucker for such types of dramas…. If they’re well made.
Its not easy making dramas about extramarital affairs be taken as seriously as once were, that’s because there is an abundance of such dramas and movies everywhere. However, “The World Of The Married” establishes itself as a force to be reckoned with with its premiere.
I love how all the supporting characters seem to feel real rather than plot devices to drive the drama forward, this feels similar in a sense to another JTBC drama “SKY Castle” that also focused on many families and their elite life and the struggles it brings along with it.
Overall, the premiere of “The World Of The Married” made it an instant hit in my eyes and judging by the people working on this drama, I can sense it’ll only get better. 2020 has been an okay year for kdramas so far and “The World Of The Married” premiere is probably my favorite of a 2020 kdrama thus far.
The writer also has reference material (since its based on a British series) which means we could get a cohesive consistent plot for the entirety of its run, hopefully. The writer behind the drama also wrote two dramas that were very typical and not memorable, so I have my doubts, but since he has the original material available at hand all the time, I expect better writing this time.
“The World Of The Married” could easily end up becoming the newest JTBC hit and if the drama continues to be this tense, I think it’ll even be a bigger success than “Itaewon Class.”
What about you guys? Have you seen the premiere of “The World Of The Married”? what did you think of it?
