tvN’s newest drama that took over “Little Women” time slot is here and its already a big hit in South Korea, lets talk about “The Queen’s Umbrella” premiere.

Note: this article is a first-impression review, it doesn’t mean this is the writer’s final thoughts on the drama. This is a spoiler review.

The Queen’s Umbrella”  is about a queen who has delinquent sons, and through chains of events, she finds out she must train them after her own crown prince is diagnosed with an illness that could potentially end his life shortly. She finds out that if none of her sons can take over his position, it won’t end well for any of them.

I believe that for people who enjoy historical kdramas, this one probably hit the spot just right. I am personally slightly jaded towards historical dramas, I don’t particularly enjoy them in any language. There are certain exceptions and thus far, “The Queen’s Umbrella” is shaping out to be an average ‘saga’ so to speak.

The first episode of “The Queen’s Umbrella” was a bit difficult to get through but I get it because this needs to be set up correctly in order for people to grow attached to the characters and their struggles. Things definitely picked up in the 2nd episode which was comparatively much more entertaining but also in a sense, heartbreaking, as it seems to foreshadow some horrible things to come.

The good thing is, “The Queen’s Umbrella” is already doing immensely well in ratings in Korea. I haven’t seen many international kdrama fans discuss it yet but that could change in the coming weeks especially if the drama picks up even more.

I don’t doubt for a moment that tvN has another hit on their hands, I think if the script maintains momentum, we could be looking at 15% and even 20% in ratings later on.

I could also sense that the drama will progressively get heavy. While its hinted at, I think Baek in Hyuk’s character will die around the half way mark of the drama judging by the way his character has been set up if not earlier.

Kim Hye Soo is amazing as always, she’s the pillar of the show. A captivating performance from start to finish as you’d expect. Rookie actor Moon Sang-Min definitely stands out, he has a bright future ahead of him. He does well opposite such a huge sunbae like Kim Hye Soo.

For some reason, Yoo Seon Ho looks high af, I initially expected that his mother found him smoking or something and was surprised when I found out he was putting on makeup. I don’t know if its the makeup or the lighting but it seems intentional on the director’s part.

We have the stunning Kim Hae-Sook playing the role of the king’s mother. Its been only two episodes, and I already can’t stand her. We have a nice mix of rising talents and established sunbae actors, so this should be interesting.

Chanhee’s acting seems to have drastically improved from the last time I’ve seen him, which I expected because its been about 3 years since I last saw him in a drama. It would have been bad if it was the same level as back then. I feel he seems a bit more relaxed and comfortable in his role this time around and I feel a bit more sincerity in his performance too. He will likely play a very integral role the more the drama progresses so it’ll be interesting to see just how much he has improved.

“The Queen’s Umbrella” has a lot of potential as a historical kdrama, we haven’t had many of them this year so it definitely stands out in that regard. I think if the plot picks up and the crown prince faces a suspicious early death, the drama will do even better than expected. I expect that anyone who watches the show will likely shed a lot of tears as it progresses, so prepare yourselves.

So these are my thoughts on The Queen’s Umbrella, so what about you guys? did you like the episodes? let me know what you thought in the comment section below.
