SBS’s newest drama “One Dollar Lawyer” is finally here, and here is what I thought of it.

Note: this article is a first-impression review, it doesn’t mean this is the writer’s final thoughts on the drama. This is a spoiler review.

I had high expectations going in mainly because our Namgoong Min picks immensely entertaining projects, even if the writing wavers, as its the case with most of them, he remains the focal point and tries his best to maintain engagement through his amazing acting. You can rely on him to draw people in.

Despite that, the premiere of “One Dollar Lawyer” turned out to be very underwhelming, it felt like I wasn’t watching a premiere, but rather the 9th or 10th episode of an ongoing kdrama, this is probably the best way I can describe it.

There is not much of a draw in the premiere of “One Dollar Lawyer” unless you find Cheon Ji-Hun intriguing and want to know why he’s doing it. There isn’t much of a comedy, there is definitely adorable quirkiness but it feels so mature and as if it either doesn’t know how to deliver better on comedy or not quite attempting it. I’ll find out which one it is as time goes by.

Because the premiere episode focused on average every day people, you could say it couldn’t have been immensely over-the-top and to that, I agree…. I just couldn’t find something to grasp on aside from Cheon Ji-Hun and Namgoong Min’s and honestly…. That should not be the case.

It was average in every sense of the word. The premiere doesn’t remotely try to lure people in and just trusts that the actors behind the projects will draw you in, and in theory, this isn’t such a terrible idea as long as you’re gearing up towards something meaningful.

Will this be the case with “One Dollar Lawyer”? I honestly have no idea, but I’ll tell you this, if I didn’t know any of the actors involved in this project, I would have tuned out at the half mark of episode 1.

I am still inclined to give the drama a chance because I know Namgoong Min, and I honestly believe there must be something there. I have been watching for over a decade to know it could be the case. There are many kdramas that start out light or under-deliver when it comes to premieres but then end up being amazing as they go on and the plots thickens. This could be one of them.

If there is one thing I am happy about, its the fact that Namgoong Min is seemingly playing a light character this time. I recall in my previous review of his last project, I said I wished he’d take on a lighter project next time and he actually did. Some viewers who became fans of him recently might not know this but he’s an amazing comedic actor. The dude gives 110% in whatever he does. Ji Eun does well here too.

I wasn’t the biggest fan of this drama’s premiere but as I said, I am not giving up on it yet. There could definitely be something very interesting happening as the episodes air.

This 2022 I have seen so many legal dramas that I am honestly just not in the mood for them anymore. This review is subjective and I feel obligated to tell you that I have seen many iterations of lawyers helping out the weak in 2022 more than I’d like to admit, it just doesn’t pull me in anymore. This well could be the reason why I found the drama’s premiere underwhelming.

So these are my thoughts on One Dollar Lawyer, so what about you guys? did you like the episodes? let me know what you thought in the comment section below.
