“My Sweet Mobster” Episodes 1 And 2 Review- Delightful And Funny
JTBC has premiered its newest drama “My Sweet Mobster,” let us talk about it!
Note: this article is a first-impression review, it doesn’t mean this is the writer’s final thoughts on the drama. This is a spoiler review.
“My Sweet Mobster” definitely has an unconventional story of a mobster leader who falls for a woman who does YouTube for kids. It was definitely one of the reasons I tuned into the drama.
if there is one woman who can make borderline comical or 2-D characters appear 3-D in an endearing way without coming off too cartoonish, its probably Han Sun-Hwa who again brings her A-game to this drama.
and Uhm Tae-Goo taters that line between being frightening and sweet at the same time so well, you’re convinced he’s a sweet mobster indeed.
There are many kid-like elements to this drama, and it does appear sort of cartoonish to a degree at times, but I think it was done well, and it balances serious and comical elements well too. In my previous review of “Dreaming of a Freaking Fairytale,” which has similar ‘vibes’ to this drama so to speak, I wasn’t as kind, and I think it came down to how the comical elements are played into the mix and how well they’re done.
While I do think “My Sweet Mobster” appears slightly comical with its child-like approach, I think its done well and in such an endearing way, they work great. I also think the two actors are great at playing off of each other and their respective characters so it does not come off annoying.
This is the debut project of screenwriter Na Kyeong, so there is nothing to compare to, which is a source of slight worry for me but as long as it remains this fun, I don’t think we’ll run into too many issues.
The screenwriter also melts “cute” elements to real life tragedies and deep societal issues in a way that doesn’t sour the mood so badly, which is definitely a skill on its own. I think the rehabilitation of the said mobsters as an idea is very interesting. They have a great leader who is both tough and sweet at the same time who hopefully can make sure they are rehabilitated and properly re-enter society.
The chemistry between the mobsters and their leader is also great, and the character Joo Il-Young played by an actor named Kim Hyun-Jin has caught my attention.
This drama will also be 16 episodes, let us see how it goes.
I didn’t personally expect the pairing of Uhm Tae-Goo and Han Sun-Hwa to be this cute, but it is. Uhm Tae-Goo is such a pro, how can he be this cute and scary at the same time? and his voice? A.M.A.Z.I.N.G.
He rarely makes appearances in Kdramas and has been focusing on movies for some time, so I am guessing there is a good reason he chose this project as his 1st in 3 years. Its been a while and we’ve missed him on TV.
Overall, this was a sweet watch. This will be something cute to watch while chilling on a weekend. Can’t wait to binge more episodes of it in a couple of weeks.
So what about you guys, did you like the premiere?
