My Liberation Notes” is among the many new kdramas that aired this month and is a project I’ve been anticipating but not for the reasons you’d think.

“My Liberation Notes” is written by the same screenwriter who gave us the masterpiece that is “My Mister,” one of the best kdramas I’ve ever seen in my entire life. This is the main reason why I was excited about this drama.

Note: this article is a first-impression review, it doesn’t mean this is the writer’s final thoughts on the drama. This is a spoiler review.

So how was the premiere of “My Liberation Notes” in my opinion?

Quite nice actually.

Right off the bat, I think its important to say this, “My Liberation Notes” is not the type of kdrama people usually watch, that doesn’t mean it has no audience but such types of dramas don’t really make the biggest buzz online unless they have massive A-list actors who have massive fanbases domestically and overseas attached to them. Its sad that the drama isn’t up to a great start either in terms of ratings in South Korea.

It doesn’t mean our dear main cast isn’t that but if we compare them to “Our Blues” cast for example, you can see a clear difference. Both are immensely talented groups of people but there are definitely more people watching “Our Blues” than this drama. This is just an objective observation.

I say this to come to the conclusion that “My Liberation Notes” isn’t the type of drama you might enjoy but thats not because its bad or poorly written, yet. First of all, its very slow-paced, even slower than what you’re usually used to. Second, “My Liberation Notes” ponders on life and mundane events and happenings, and sometimes, its not what people want to see. People watch TV to escape reality and sometimes if you watch something that resembles your own reality, that can put you in a bad mood or remind you of something you’re trying to escape.

Despite saying that, I personally enjoyed “My Liberation Notes” premiere. It didn’t blow me away but I liked it. It reminded me a lot of “My Mister,” but I’d say this, “My Mister” had a bigger first impact on me mainly because the stuff IU’s character was going through was a lot to handle and unpack.

“My Liberation Notes” screenwriter also surprised me because this time we have obviously difficult-to-like characters. I don’t like Min Ki’s character or Ji Won’s character and I especially can’t tolerate Lee El’s character. I think the screenwriter wants to take us on a journey with these characters as they become better people who actually live their lives.

Personally speaking, I am not the type of person who needs to like characters in order to enjoy something but in this case, I think its important that we come to like them because this is a character-driven script. So I hope they become more tolerable in the future.

I relate a lot to “My Liberation Notes” and while watching I found myself recalling recent and past events that happened to me. I liked many quotes from the premiere episodes too and I can understand some of the characters’ frustrations with life.

I like everyone’s performance and I especially love Son Seok Gu’s performance here, he’s such a charming actor who is terribly underrated. I can’t wait to find out more about his character and why he’s here, I have a feeling its because he lost his family or his wife or his child or his girlfriend.

I see potential, and I am optimistic about the future of this drama. The premiere was good but I definitely had higher expectations, the thing is, I know with such types of dramas its a bit more important to give it some time, I hope we end up with something similar to what “My Mister” was.

So these are my thoughts on “My Liberation Notes” , so what about you guys? did you like the episodes? let me know what you thought in the comment section below.

  1. I am rooting for this TV drama, and so I am grateful for your confidence and seeing its potential.
The second episode showed more character and plot development. I am starting to understand Mi Jung’s frustrations. I also like the Yeom siblings’ neighbors/friends. The pacing should build intensity but this is not happening because of poor editing. There were scenes in the 1st and 2nd episodes that need to be edited.
Looking forward to seeing good editing and memorable scenes in the next episodes. It would be a bonus to see more funny scenes with Lee Min-Ki in it
    Go team MLN!

  2. I loved “My liberation notes” so far. Best drama of 2022 for me so far, I can’t wait for the next episodes, really! Finally a good drama.

I like all characters so far, except Ji Won’s. In my personal view, she is not the one for this character, it is clearly the bad casting. Ji Won is a good actress but she needs material to shine. She cannot play just with her appearance or visuals. She was super in “ Fight for my way”, because she had a lot of dialogues and scenes through which she could show “open” the character.

Here is a totally different story. In the first episode, Mi-jung almost do not speak, you can count the number of words she is saying. And in general, Mi-jung is not saying much, that is how the writer wants to portray her. And sorry to say – Ji-won makes her super boring, bland, uninteresting. Luckily, her love interest in this drama is Son Seok Koo, a good actor himself ( and an eye candy let’s be honest) and this is why I don’t fast forward their scenes, he saves the day.
My favourite so far is Ki Jung, I know you don’t like her, but to me – she is the most interesting to watch, I find Lee EI’s acting is excellent here and her character is well-written.
So very positive overall, it seems that even Gong Yoo is now supporting this drama and I agree with him because it is some quality stuff!
