“Lies Hidden In My Garden” Episode 1 And 2 Review- Up To A Promising Start
The queen Kim Tae Ri is back at last alongside the new powerhouse Lim Ji Yeon, “Lies Hidden In My Garden” premiered last night, let us discuss the drama!
This is a drama I was excited about because of the casting alone. And to be honest, I love me some dark crime mystery drama which I think is what this drama will be.
Note: this article is a first-impression review, it doesn’t mean this is the writer’s final thoughts on the drama. This is a spoiler review.
The drama is based on a novel and will only be 8 episodes long which is great news because I can tell from the premiere episodes that the drama’s premise does not need 16 episodes.
I was intrigued by the premiere and left it with more questions than answers. I also really enjoyed it.
I loved the cinematography and the directing. Its reminiscent of “Parasite” like some netizens have pointed out. I think even the house used is the same if I am not mistaken. If not, then the houses look very similar. Regardless, the camera angles and the shots taken were all very much top-notch, such a great premiere.
The only complaint I have is the pacing. I understand the director might have been looking to set the ‘mood’ for the episodes to come but some scenes play on for a bit too long as if they’re overstaying their welcome. The 1st and 2nd episodes could have definitely been fitted into one episode but still, I had lots of fun watching it.
The husband seems to be the killer and I suspect he’s slipping something into his wife and son’s drinks. He seems to be a class-A gaslighter who is using his wife’s struggles to control her and everything around him just the way he loves.
Not unless he might actually be a decent human being and she’s not a reliable narrator, but this is more so the highly unlikely scenario. I mention it because Kim Tae Hee said the drama takes a drastic turn towards the halfway mark which means next week’s episodes.
Some people think the husband isn’t who killed Yoon-Beom because it would be too obvious. I am a bit on the fence on this, I think he is the killer or somewhat involved, but I recognize it would be so stupid of him to get caught this easily because he appears to be a smart man. I think the police will more than be able to connect him to Yoon-Beom one way or another from phone call records and such. Sang-Eun’s testimony would be crucial here and it would be interesting to see her turn sour on the entire family adding fuel to the fire.
Its either she joins Joo-Ran’s hands and exposes the husband or she makes her life a living hell moving forward.
I would love it if she turns out to be also twisted in her own way due to what she suffered. This would make the drama even more interesting than it already is.
Now onto performances. I think Tae Hee suits the tortured mother role perfectly, she’s doing great thus far. Ji Yeon is doing amazing here, the change in her eyes alone is astounding, you wouldn’t believe she was that bully in the glory just a couple of months back. She looks so defeated. Such a talented actress, I can’t wait to see her performance later on in the series.
Kim Sung-Oh also does a great job, when he plays a nice character, you fall for him and when he play a villain you can’t help but hate him. in this performance I noticed just how subtle he is with his expressions and mannerisms. Its like he wants to show the character has some secrets but at the same time, he’s not unhinged or quite horrible either from his body language. The things he does seem quite odd considering the setting, but it could also be viewed favorably if this wasn’t a suspense crime mystery.
I can’t wait to see what he does with the character later on too.
I have a feeling I will enjoy “Lies Hidden In My Garden.” I love such settings and types of stories. I love a good murder mystery. Can’t wait for what will come.
