One of the most anticipated kdramas of the second half of 2021, “Hometown Cha-Cha-Cha”, has finally aired, but how good was the premiere?

Today, I am here to discuss “Hometown Cha-Cha-Cha” episodes 1 and 2 and share why I was surprised in an unexpected way. The drama has premiered to great ratings, its first episode did perform slightly better than its second.

This isn’t meant to be as a final judgment on the drama, I am only sharing my initial thoughts on it.

Note: this will be a spoiler review of the said episodes in the title. This is a subjective review.

The initial hype

I walked in to “Hometown Cha-Cha-Cha” with extremely high expectations, I expected to be wowed, I knew it was going to be slower and a slice of life kdrama but I still walked in with high expectations which backfired in my face, unexpectedly.

I know what you’ll say, guys, its a slice of life kdrama but I still expected it to be a bit different from what I’ve seen, something that would justify why it was remade as a kdrama.

The original work and worries

“Hometown Cha-Cha-Cha” was based on a movie and throughout the first episode especially, the first thought that came into my mind was how this would’ve made more sense as a movie. I had forgotten it was originally a movie script.

“Hometown Cha-Cha-Cha” episode 1 was slightly disappointing, it didn’t live up to my expectations, episode 2 was a lot better but still, it sort of confirmed some of my worries going forward.

I can already tell every single plot point it’ll likely tackle. I knew for sure they had to have met each other in the past since episode 1. This is not to say I am a smart ass but to discuss how repetitive and exhausted some plot points have become.

The original movie was made in 2004, we’ve already seen older kdrama writers who began writing in the 2000s struggle to adapt to today’s standards. I am not saying this will happen here but since the original work is old and probably has many ideas that are considered a bit cliché now, it could become a source of concern.

I like slice of life kdramas, don’t get me wrong, but I like them to have a hint of originality and uniqueness, thus far, I don’t see that in “Hometown Cha-Cha-Cha” and its honestly a bit sad because I had such high expectations. I love all of the actors involved in this project, but I’d like for the drama to be carried by its plot not it’s actors who are obviously good-looking and have good chemistry.

I also wanted to say this, something I’ve noticed and it kind of took me by surprise. I haven’t seen anyone discuss this so this might be an issue with me, the chemistry between Shin Min Ah And Kim Seon Ho is just… okay, not wow, okay. It didn’t wow me, judging by the trailers and stills, I expected a better spark… that didn’t turn out the way I had hoped. For example, in comparison, Shin Min Ah’s chemistry with So Ji Sub was a lot better in my opinion from the get-go. The same could be said for Suzy and Kim Seon Ho. I don’t know about that, I might be reading too much into this.

“Hometown Cha-Cha-Cha” will be 16 episodes and considering what it was based on, I already struggle to see how it could maintain hype throughout its run time.

I certainly hope my attitude towards the drama changes with the upcoming episodes as I’d like this drama to do well. My opinion could change entirely depending on how it progresses and this is what I am hoping for.

I know for a fact most of the feedback thus far on the drama has been overwhelmingly positive so I was a bit hesitant to share my thoughts. I decided to do so because I plan on reviewing the drama halfway and when it’s done as well, it will be an interesting article to refer to a couple of weeks from now.

So these are my thoughts on “Hometown Cha-Cha-Cha”, so what about you guys? did you like the episodes? let me know what you thought in the comment section below.

  1. Speaking from experience, all Korean dramas are similar, first few episodes are very boring and lack the pulling factor of wanting to continue to watch but from 3rd or 4th episodes onward, action & emotion start to get anyone addicted till the end. Suggest to fast forward or skip the beginning.

    1. This. I actually agree with the author at some point. I’m still looking for something that will make me hooked. I cant pin point it yet but yeah i agree the first few episodes of Kdramas usually isn’t much. But hopeful for the development of this drama!

  2. youre being such a smart ass… the way I see it you have a close mind about this and that you are literally reviewing this bec u feel it just hyped. it was a good drama from the get go. have u watched the original movie? i did… the chemistry is superb… plus you are literally comparing their chemistry to a finished project when they just started with just 2. you were right for beimg hesistant on writing ur reviewel bec many will not think the same way u do… just stop reveiwing dramas altogether because the way I see it, your so bad at it… and do some research…

    1. they’re so many things to debunk with this comment but above all, telling me to quit because I suck ain’t it, this is a personal opinion and just like you have the right to say you like it, I have the right to say what I want. when comparing their chemistry I said ‘from the get-go’ for each example, I just felt a better spark with their previous pairs, thats all. the reason I am reviewing it is that i am a fan of both actors and rave about them often in my other reviews and even if I feel its hyped and want to review, it is still up to me. don’t like this? block and move on.

    2. Gurl you’re slow as fuck. Just because admin does not give the review that sits right to your spirit you acted like a fucking Helga from Hey Arnold. If your ass can’t handle difference in opinions don’t even bother to read it lol

  3. I haven’t watched the drama yet although it have stellar cast i just don’t like an overhyped drama maybe u can try other drama with interesting plot like police university

  4. I always like to read your drama review because it is very unbiased.
I totally agree with this review also.Shin min ah and Kim seon are very pretty actors .They look very great in dramas also.I love them but here their chemistry didn’t hit me like I thought.
Hope it will get better in upcoming episodes

  5. It was a pleasant and light drama for me. Maybe because i dont really go deep in it anyway. It was nice and warm even for the few first episodes. But yeah people got different opinions so

  6. I also had high hopes but I agree with all your points so I am glad I am not the only one! I love Kim Seon Ho, he is the reason I started watching this drama, but it seems to me that the male part is just so cliche, so far. He is helping everyone, has a million jobs and on top of they had to show us that he is reading Thoreau; it is just too much! but I hope it will get better

  7. Chemistry is superb with the dimple team. ❤ I love it.
The spark between two, I can’t deny it when they smile in episode 1 ending Du shik ( Kim Seon ho ) ❤Hye jin (Shin Min-a) fighhhhtinggggg

  8. I totally understand how you feel as it does feel like nothing new. I however still loved it as after watching Lawless Lawyer, Extraordinary You, and Beyond Evil I was in the perfect mode for something super light and simple with no fantasy, love triangles, or serial killers and this hit just the spot. I hope it remains as simple and fun as the first two episodes.

  9. I love how the male character breaks kdrama steoreotypes of him being a jack of all trades, not really having that “degree”, is not well-accomplished and doesn’t have that polished look of how a man should be. I like that they were able to showcase that a warm heart — that extends beyond oneself makes a man truly admirable and I saw that in the male lead. I also the male actor’s acting– so natural and his comedic timing was just right without going overboard.

I like Shin Min ah’s acting as usual. Very smart and experienced actress.

I love how simple and heartwarming the drama is so far. This is what I needed, nothing complicated just pure chill and heartwarming kdrama without needing to read between the lines. <3

  10. Agree that it doesn’t have the WOW factor that made me notice KSH in Start-Up and that the chemistry between the 2 lead actors are not that sizzling. However, so far, the first 2 episodes gave me the feeling of hope and the sense of healing, rejuvenating, recharging. Maybe it’s in the snippets of the characters’ back stories and how they seem to be enjoying their simple life; or, in the cinematography that showcases the warmth and beauty of the featured South Korean province. I’m not giving up on this yet and I hope that it will redeem itself in the succeeding episodes.

  11. Agree, nothing special in this drama for the moment. The only nice thing is to see the ocean..There are many similar dramas, like Do do sol sol lala sol comes to mind – they all fall into category of “cute” dramas. Will see how many episodes I am going to last before I switch to smth else..

  12. You totally nailed it. I heard all the hype and I looked forward to watching it. Episode 1 started off well, but dissolved into silliness for me. I won’t be watching any more episodes. There are far too many great shows on TV to watch than to waste my time investing in this series.

  13. Well love it right from the start, yes it’s repetitive but that’s the formula that simple minded like me enjoy. Sometimes it’s this simple light hearted dramas that makes it so relaxing to watch and hey look at it now with 4 episodes already, it’s topping the charts and everybody is raving about it.
