So MBC’s newest Weekend drama “Black Out” is finally here, and a new competitor for the coveted weekend time slott has been born, will it be able to compete?

Note: this article is a first-impression review, it doesn’t mean this is the writer’s final thoughts on the drama. This is a spoiler review.

I’ve been researching the drama and apparently, it was filmed in late 2021 to 2022, so its been filmed a long time ago, about 2 years ago. Its Become somewhat the norm that Kdramas are filmed a long time before their release.

Anyways, the drama is about a promising young man who is framed for murder. After his discharge, he tries to find who the murderer was and chaos ensues.

For a premiere, “Black Out” was definitely memorable. Its such a dark twisted tale of a man who has everything taken from him so young, losing potentially, not only his father but his mother too. Just imagine this happening to you or someone close to you, its so dark and twisted how sometimes you just get framed for stuff you didn’t do and your entire life is lost, not only that, but even if you’re vindicated, you already lost so much.

So, according to Jung-Woo’s distorted memories, he has somewhat of a recollection of what happened while drunk that night. My guess is, he did have a heated argument with Da-Eun but left before the actual bad guy came.

Its very weird or maybe not that neither the police nor Jung-Woo said Da-eun might have another boyfriend, or maybe in his daze, Jung-Woo didn’t think to examine what Bo Young meant when she said that about her, because this means there might another man involved in this and this man is the one who killed both.

I felt so bad for Jung-Woo and his parents. The mother’s actions strike as if she’s atoning for her son’s murders by enduring hardships in their hometown because if she doesn’t, it means he’s guilty? which is an odd perspective to have if you ask me.

I know finding out your son potentially killed two women is soul crushing but you should believe in your son and even if you don’t, doing this to yourself is obviously dumb.

I don’t mean she could go out and party on the daily but to make herself go through such hell is a weird way of atoning for her son’s sins but to each their own.

My guess is we haven’t been introduced to the murderer yet and Jung-Woo’s uncle is somewhat involved in the cover-up. I have my eyes on Su-O too, Jung-Woo’s cousin but he could be merely a witness and thats it.

If who-done-it type of mystery dramas are done right they can be quite fun to watch, they’re my favorite thing.

“Black Out” won’t be everyone’s cup of tea but to those who enjoy such types of dramas, this is a good start.

The screenwriter behind this drama wrote “Save Me 2” which aired on OCN which was much more into violent and twisted stories than MBC ever was, so I am guessing this will have a similar tone. Its also 14 episodes which is an odd number and also seems long for such type of work. If such types of plots are dragged out, they can lose their charm pretty easily.

BUT, its too early to judge so let us wait and see how it pans out. Sadly, the ratings don’t look too good because its competing with SBS’s “Good Partner” but I am hoping for the ratings to go up, I think it’ll depend a lot on next week’s episodes.

So, have you guys seen “Black Out” yet? Thoughts?
