Here is a review of Coupang play’s “One Ordinary Day” premiere episodes.

Coupang play’s first-ever drama is here and it has made such an impression on me. One of the best premieres of a 2021 kdrama.

Korean directors excel at such adaptations even more so especially when given the budget and no constraints which appears to be the case with “One Ordinary Day.”

Note: this will be a spoiler review of the said episodes in the title. This is a subjective review.

Coupang play playing catch up with the rest

I’ve said this before and I’ll repeat it again, Coupang play is playing catch up at this point with the OTT market, and most likely, they are a bit late to the game. Will they end up on top? Will they dominate the race in the end? That remains to be seen, but for now, I am enjoying their first project.

With the advancement of Netflix into the Asian market, many have learned that it is possible to produce a drama that can captivate viewers worldwide even if its 19+ and nonrestrictive. Average Korean TV dramas still need to abide by a set of rules and given that Coupang play wants to play into the same strengths of Netflix is a testimony of how much Netflix has truly influenced the way Local media sees the market.

It must’ve cost a lot to get Kim Soo Hyun on board and that was a great choice. If you want to be seen, you need hallyu actors to launch your platform. The attention “One Ordinary Day” has gotten has a lot to do with Soo Hyun’s star power.

As far as I know, the series is exclusively available on Coupang play, which is a mixed bag. The platform definitely needs to expand overseas if they want to be taken seriously. I know this particular point is very difficult to execute in real life, but if they want to be on the same wavelength as Netflix, they need to expand and make the series available worldwide, this will help them spread faster. There is a lot of risk involved with it, but if they want to go somewhere with this platform, they have to do something as risky as this and fast, with limitations, growth won’t be as high as they hope.

It remains to be seen when they plan on expanding but the longer they take, the more difficult it will be to catch up. I know they’ve just begun but this is a major deciding factor in how fast a certain project can go viral globally.

The script- an initial review

“One Ordinary Day” premiere was amazing. I loved every minute of it. I was very nervous watching certain scenes and my heart broke in other scenes. “One Ordinary Day” premiere wastes no time getting right into it, it doesn’t dwell on useless character introductions that feel like lectures for the audience and leaves you to decide for yourself what you think each character traits are, which I love by the way. I love it when screenwriters don’t treat us like little kids feeding every single detail of the plot to us.

“One Ordinary Day” feels like a movie, the level of production is immaculate and the performances are amazing. The drama is very gritty and is 18+, I don’t advise the younger audience to watch it and I have a feeling its about to get even more graphic.

Personally speaking, I like such type of content when its well-made and so far, it is done well. This drama premiere is definitely among the best for a 2021 kdrama.

I am also so happy the drama is short, its only 8 episodes long and the drama airs twice weekly which is another gift from Coupang play. Unlike a certain OTT [ehm APPLE TV+ ehm]….

I feel so bad for Hyun Soo but the dude is dumb and naive, like on another level which humanizes him a lot. Lawyer Shin is very suspicious and I am afraid the dude will throw Hyun Soo under the bus, it doesn’t seem like he takes sh*t seriously but again, this is likely not his first rodeo and normal people will do this for a living will likely not have an over-reaction unless its warranted.

It just speaks for the cruel nature and disconnection police officers, detectives, lawyers and prosecutors have when dealing with such cases. On one hand, you can’t blame them, on the other hand, you wish they had a bit more sympathy. But then, we circle back to the same point, how do you know he’s truly innocent?

Hyun Soo is f*cked, he’s f*cked to the moon and back, I think they can charge him with murder even without a confession, which is terrible news, if he’s innocent. We know that he’s screwed and it doesn’t take knowledge about the system to know the dude is screwed.

You know what would be shocking? If it turns out he’s actually done it.

I highly doubt this will be the case since I read the original series summary of the ending but they could do it. Hard drugs and alcohol are a terrible mix and we can’t be for certain that he didn’t kill her under the influence.

I look forward to the next episodes, I can’t wait to see how the Korean remake turns out to be.

So these are my thoughts on “One Ordinary Day”, so what about you guys? did you like the episodes? let me know what you thought in the comment section below.
