“Mr. Plankton” Ending Explained- Did Hae Jo Die?

Netflix has released the entirety of “Mr. Plankton.” Let us recap the finale and explain the ending!

“Mr. Plankton” episode 10 recap

The episode begins with Jae-Mi crying her eyes out after meeting her mother who refused to recognize her. She then wanders on the streets crying her eyes out.

Ki-Ho lures in Jae-Mi because both Eo Heung’s mother and Bong are looking for them and think they might be able to find them once they find her. Hae Jo has a meal with Eo Heung and he begs him to eat. He recalls his past and how his past actions as a kid ruined their family.

Flashback to the past

Hae Jo/ Seung Hyeok asked his mother for a baby brother or sister because he didn’t want to play with his dad. The mother eventually caves in and calls the sperm office and finds out his father is not his real father and the sperm was taken from another man.

The mother spirals after that and decides to hide it from both of them. Then, Hae Jo/ Seung Hyeok tells his dad he has a sibling coming along and when the father checks with the clinic about the sperm, he finds out the truth. During a heated argument, Hae Jo/ Seung Hyeok accidentally finds out the truth too. It scares him badly.

The relationship between the parents deteriorates and the mother is taking a lot of pills to cope. One day she comes to Hae Jo/ Seung Hyeok and asks if he wants to go stargazing. He says no, because he was afraid if he went, he won’t see his father again.

That night the mother asked the son to come with her, she was planning on killing them both. She ended up committing suicide. The father withdrew completely from that point on and would essentially ignore his son’s every plea.

During his last day of highschool on graduation day, he asks his dad to come but he doesn’t say what day it was. When he didn’t come, Hae Jo/ Seung Hyeok abandoned that life and ran away.

Back to the present

When Jae-Mi arrives at the cafe, she finds out that she’s been ambushed. They try to contact both using her phone and will wait. She reveals she was left to see her mother and found out her birthday was the day she was abandoned. Everyone feels bad for her and try to help out, she’s very grateful.

When the two men arrive at the cafe, they realize they were ambushed.

Bong talks to Hae Jo/ Seung Hyeok, and he reveals he’s very scared and both cry in each other’s arms.

Eo Heung also faces his mother in her car, she asks for his phone, opens it and then tells him to get out of the car. When he does she takes off, she calls him and tells him to wander off and have fun as he wishes and when he misses her food. He should come back.

She then asks John, her righthand man, to borrow his glasses. She then asks him to not leave to America and stay with her. He agrees.

When Jae-Mi reunites with Hae Jo/ Seung Hyeok, she hugs him tightly. He now won’t let go of her. They get back to the cafe and all of them have drinks together and have fun.

Later at night, because of his headache, he wanders off on the streets feeling dizzy, Jae-Mi catches him and he says he must find his father, as she goes to fetch the keys, he takes off with a taxi.

He goes back to his father’s house. He runs into him as he’s heading inside, they both hug tightly and cry. When he gets inside, he finds out his room was left as is and he finds the tapes his father had of him are still there, his graduation degree was also there.

He goes into his room and lays down before Jae Mi shows up before him. They steal kisses. In the morning, the two take off and he leaves his father his card with his information on it.

The two end up wandering around with the car going from one place to the next. On TV, they see Eo Heung’s mother with her 2^nd son John on a cooking TV show. The couple carries on with everything even as the winter comes, he even celebrates her real birthday.

On another day, he gets a notification of a live video from Eo Heung who is now a content creator who loves climbing mountains and such.

The couple’s car has no working heater and he promises to fix it. Jae Mi runs off and then finds out a beautiful location in the snow. The couple runs around and plays, then, they see clovers, he dares her to find a four-leafed clover and he’ll stay at a hotel with her. She agrees and runs off to find one.

As she goes, Hae Jo’s nose begins bleeding. He can now tell that he’ll likely die right now. He lays on the snow and hears Jae Mi running in the distance crying her eyes out trying to catch up to him. She holds him and he’s barely hanging on. He says he wants to live but its not possible.

He looks her in the eyes, he’s unable to speak. He holds her barely and says in his mind he loves her, she says the same back to him as she cries. He then closes his eyes.

We then see a scene of their jeep driving off into the distance.
