tvN’s “Hometown Cha-Cha-Cha” has sadly come to a conclusion, here is a recap of the finale, the ending explained and my final thoughts on it.

Did grandma Gam Ri pass away? And why?

Yes, grandma Gam Ri passed away and the first 20 minutes of the show pay tribute to her beautiful character. Her son comes to attend to the funeral and speaks about how much he regrets not being there more for his mother.

In regards to why, the show doesn’t specify the reason behind Gam Ri’s passing. It is safe to assume she died of old age.

did Du Sik and Hye Jin Get married?

Yes, they do.

Hye Jin proposes to Du Sik after giving it much thought on what to do. She went back to the seashore where they first met after she lost her shoes. She proposes to him but he says, ‘no.’ Not because he doesn’t want to marry her but because he was planning on proposing that day as well. He worked hard to earn enough money to buy her a diamond necklace.

After she proposes to him, she tells him to take turns and propose to her. She accepts and they say I love you to each other.

They decide to have their wedding photo shoot in Gongjin but the wedding will be in Seoul and all the town people are invited to the wedding.

Does Hye Jin leave Gongjin?

Hye Jin got a very lucrative job offering in Seoul and despite that being her ultimate goal, she turns down the offer after telling Du Sik. She fell in love with the town and doesn’t want to leave it ever, it is also the place where she met Du Sik.

Who won the lottery in the Gongjin?

Turns out, Police officer Eun-Cheol is the one who actually won the lottery. It happened while he was still studying, he took care of the supermarket instead of Yun-Gyeong and tried for the first time to get a ticket and ended up winning.

He’s been making donations regularly and has still so much saved that he can buy a house. Mi Seon is over the moon to learn that and praises how diligent he is. They talk about their future together and while they’re still dating, it is safe to assume the two shall get married one day since they’re discussing their future home location.

Did Seong-Hyeon and Wang Ji-Won end up together?

Yes. Du Sik tells Seong Hyeon not to waste his chance and to admit his feelings to Ji Won or he’ll miss his timing, again. One day, he decides to do that in the parking lot. He tells her to stay by his side and asks her for a date too.

They begin dating and their show turns out to be a massive success, it surpasses the double digits in ratings and they’re planning their next hit variety show.

Did “Hometown Cha-Cha-Cha” have a happy ending? Or a sad ending?

“Hometown Cha-Cha-Cha” ending was a very happy ending. Fans are dubbing it one of the best kdrama endings of 2021. Asides from the grandma’s death, everyone in Gongjin had a very happy ending.

As of this writing, #HometownChaChaChaEp16 topped twitter worldwide trends at No. 2 as fans express their thoughts on the happy ending.

“Hometown Cha-Cha-Cha” finale review

“Hometown Cha-Cha-Cha” ending is probably good enough to satisfy about 95% of the people who watched it. It couldn’t have ended more perfectly. Many kdramas this year had terrible/unjustified endings so to have a nice wholesome one is welcomed.

I’ve seen how much people are raving about the drama on forums and twitter and I am happy all of those people had a good time watching it. Before I begin, I just wanted to thank all the cast and staff of “Hometown Cha-Cha-Cha” for their hard work, you’ve worked so hard and you’ve done so well. Thank you.

Now onto my review.

I liked the ending, aside from the grandma’s death which devastated me, the ending was still great. It was a slice-of-life type of kdrama and I am sure to many people it was healing and a nice distraction from the sh*t most of us are going through right now.

I still stand by what I said about the drama in my first half review, I still don’t think the drama needed to be this long. 16 episodes were wayyy more than it needed to be. There needs to be a distinction, just because the actors did well doesn’t cover for the lack of plot in the drama. The screenwriter definitely relied heavily on the actors’ star power to carry the drama and it was a huge marketing point that they focus so much on just how good-looking the two leads are together.

Kim Seon Ho and Shin Min Ah are just… there are no words to describe how amazing and charismatic they are. They truly helped me remain somewhat connected to the drama. If this same drama with its same script had rookie/ unpopular / older actors, I highly doubt it would’ve generated this much buzz.

This doesn’t mean the drama doesn’t deserve the success it received but it still feels a bit over-hyped in my opinion when taking into consideration the plot overall. This doesn’t mean I am upset it got this big, its quite the opposite, I am happy for everyone and I am sure this drama will be the platform to launch more rookie actors to stardom.

“Hometown Cha-Cha-Cha” was about almost… nothing… there is an idea there but it doesn’t need to be this long to be told. It is based on a movie and while watching it, it felt like it would’ve made more sense as a movie.

The drama was more about people going about their day and the issues they face. But even with the introduction of at least 10 supporting characters and their issues, it still felt that it was running on for too long.

To some, this is more than enough, to others, it will be lacking. I would say I am on the fence. I value well-written scripts and I love the many things the drama talked about, but I still don’t agree with the fact that it was 16 episodes. 8 would’ve been great.
