“Hometown Cha-Cha-Cha” finale review
“Hometown Cha-Cha-Cha” ending is probably good enough to satisfy about 95% of the people who watched it. It couldn’t have ended more perfectly. Many kdramas this year had terrible/unjustified endings so to have a nice wholesome one is welcomed.
I’ve seen how much people are raving about the drama on forums and twitter and I am happy all of those people had a good time watching it. Before I begin, I just wanted to thank all the cast and staff of “Hometown Cha-Cha-Cha” for their hard work, you’ve worked so hard and you’ve done so well. Thank you.
Now onto my review.
I liked the ending, aside from the grandma’s death which devastated me, the ending was still great. It was a slice-of-life type of kdrama and I am sure to many people it was healing and a nice distraction from the sh*t most of us are going through right now.
I still stand by what I said about the drama in my first half review, I still don’t think the drama needed to be this long. 16 episodes were wayyy more than it needed to be. There needs to be a distinction, just because the actors did well doesn’t cover for the lack of plot in the drama. The screenwriter definitely relied heavily on the actors’ star power to carry the drama and it was a huge marketing point that they focus so much on just how good-looking the two leads are together.
Kim Seon Ho and Shin Min Ah are just… there are no words to describe how amazing and charismatic they are. They truly helped me remain somewhat connected to the drama. If this same drama with its same script had rookie/ unpopular / older actors, I highly doubt it would’ve generated this much buzz.
This doesn’t mean the drama doesn’t deserve the success it received but it still feels a bit over-hyped in my opinion when taking into consideration the plot overall. This doesn’t mean I am upset it got this big, its quite the opposite, I am happy for everyone and I am sure this drama will be the platform to launch more rookie actors to stardom.
“Hometown Cha-Cha-Cha” was about almost… nothing… there is an idea there but it doesn’t need to be this long to be told. It is based on a movie and while watching it, it felt like it would’ve made more sense as a movie.
The drama was more about people going about their day and the issues they face. But even with the introduction of at least 10 supporting characters and their issues, it still felt that it was running on for too long.
To some, this is more than enough, to others, it will be lacking. I would say I am on the fence. I value well-written scripts and I love the many things the drama talked about, but I still don’t agree with the fact that it was 16 episodes. 8 would’ve been great.
Why are you so critical about every drama? I have watched you be extremely critical about dramas as well. Why don’t you just watch dramas for the fun without focusing so much into extreme details? You give negative reviews about even perfectly good dramas!
this is my style, I don’t think the drama is bad or terrible by any means but its not great. this happens after you watch so much kdrama content, your standards become high. you don’t have to read any of my reviews now that you know I am this critical
It is also the role of a drama critic to be objective and analyse the dramas and if they are lacking it is the role of the critic to point this out. Otherwise, there is no point of reading the critics blogs, just enough to read the fan pages where the fans will be “hoorah, omg, I so love his/her dimples…(that’s why) it is such a perfect drama”….No?)))
The fact that the show doesn’t have too much of a plot is the reason why I liked it so much lol isn’t it funny how different viewers have such differing opinions.. I’m an avid kdrama viewer & fan and I truly appreciated the simplicity of this drama. Some shows are just too far fetched so this was so refreshing for me.
I totally agree. Who in real life has a plot?? So I think it was better than the boring reality shows that are so overacted and last season after season, yet relatable enough that you felt you were a part of seeing how they handled every day problems with reality. Comical, funny, heartwarming and just truly have a bit of everything too. They had cell phones but still talked to one another too. So much life I enjoyed seeing. We all look through different lenses in life, but this series reminded me of the great losses I’ve been dealt over the last 15 years. I lost the only man I ever married unexpectedly in a car accident and we had a stillborn son 6 years prior to that so hearing Gam-Ri’s letter in the finale made my own heart explode. I’ve always struggled with my memories bc I saw it as a reminder of what was gone and never coming back but now I can see it as something that’s always with me. Great job to all involved in the production of such a great story.
Thats a very interesting take that I actually agree with. While personally, the drama was fine in my opinion, I know the simplicity could be what draws people into it and if that’s the case, then I am happy for whoever watches because it will be a pleasant experience. sometimes, its simple things that we need
Actually, I was the one who commented at the beginning that I was enjoying Hometown cha cha.. Well, my enjoyment ended at episode 10 precisely. Since then nothing, absolutely nothing happened except that Hye Jin (who was supposed to be 32 year old) fell into infancy, started calling “Hong BanJan” with a voice of a 15-year old and treating him like a baby. From this point on I lost all interest, but I am happy for those who like such stories without any substance, if it makes you happy – good for you. Having said that, I also like romances and happy endings, but this was just too mawkish, too childish for me at the end. What made an impact on me was the story of Cho Nam Suk, Chinese restaurant lady who lost her child to cancer but who is trying to continue living with (sometimes very forced) smile on her face, who is intrusive in people’s lives but who is secretly making donations to children’s hospital. This was a tears moment for me. And I just love that actress, she played in On the Verge of Incenity, she is just too good.
I watched this bc I was called Chacha, then just cha for the first 6 years of my life and to this day have an uncle & cousin who refuse to call me anything else lol. And I honestly thought it was going to have dancing in it too. I never dreamed it was going to touch my heart in such a profound way. Comical, funny, heartwarming and just truly had a bit of everything tbh. They had cell phones but still talked to one another. We all look through different lenses in life, but in the end, love is the greatest of it all. It reminded me of the great losses of which I’ve been dealt over the last 15+years. I lost the only man I ever married unexpectedly in a car accident and we had a stillborn son 6 years prior to that, so hearing Gam-Ri’s letter in the finale made my own heart explode. I’ve always struggled with my memories bc I saw it as a reminder of what was gone and never coming back but now I can see them as something that’s always with me. Great job to all involved in the production of such a great story. Thank you so much. And if you’ve not watched this or wonder if you should, WONDER NO MORE!!!
Loved each episode and spaced out the viewing to enjoy it longer….Trying to find English translations for some of the terms used. So well done.
