Yoo Ah In Sentenced To One Year In Prison, Taken Into Custody Immediately
Actor Yoo Ah In (real name Uhm Hong-sik, 38) has been sentenced to prison and taken into custody following his conviction on charges related to habitual drug use, including the use of propofol.
On September 3rd, the Seoul Central District Court’s 25th Criminal Division sentenced Yoo to one year in prison and imposed a fine of 2 million won [around$1000] for violating the Narcotics Control Act. He was specifically charged with habitual use of psychotropic drugs, marijuana smoking, abetting others to smoke marijuana, and evidence tampering.
Despite the prosecution’s request for a four-year prison sentence, the court handed down a one-year sentence. And Yoo Ah In was immediately taken into custody following the verdict.
A co-defendant, identified as Choi (33), who was also charged with smoking marijuana alongside Yoo, received an eight-month prison sentence, suspended for two years.
Yoo’s charges stem from his involvement in illegally acquiring and using propofol under the guise of cosmetic surgery anesthesia between September 2020 and March 2022. He was also accused of illegally obtaining over 1,100 sleeping pills under another person’s name from May 2021 to August 2022.
Additionally, Yoo and four others were charged with smoking marijuana during a trip to the United States earlier this year and persuading others to do the same. They also attempted to cover up their crimes by facilitating the escape of a co-conspirator, identified as Yang, and intimidating another co-conspirator into retracting their statements.
Even though the prosecution had requested arrest warrants for Yoo during the investigation phase, both the police and the prosecution’s requests were dismissed by the court.
