Seo In Guk is one of the few Korean actors who have been exempt from the military.

He had enlisted back in 2017 and not too long after he was exempt from the military due to his medical condition (osteochondral lesions). The military exemption put him in controversy because a media outlet claimed he had known of his condition but refused to treat before the enlistment and this was how he managed to be exempt from the military.

Because of the report he was asked to promptly return for a second examination of his condition and was exempt as a result.

The media outlet claimed such a serious thing towards the actor-singer and it took a toll on his reputation. Since then Seo In Guk denied the report, explained his side of the story and apologized to the public for what happened.

He even took hiatus for a while to focus on his health, he will return to the public through the upcoming tvN drama “The Smile Has Left Your Eyes.”

On September 28, he greeted everyone publicly for the first time since his controversy; he was accompanied by director Yoo Je Won, Jung So Min, Park Sung Woong, Seo Eun Soo, and Jang Young Nam all attended the press conference to promote the upcoming drama.

As the actors introduced their characters, when it was his turn Seo In Guk didn’t introduce it by sitting in his chair he stood up and bowed 90° in apology for his controversy.

He said,

“May I stand up to say something?

First of all, I would like to thank the reporters for attending the press conference and before we begin, I’d like to apologize for causing trouble until now. I will replay you with a good performance and good acting.”

He went on to explain the character of his drama and expressed that he had difficulty choosing the project, he said,

“Kim Moo Young (the name of the character he plays) is someone who people consider a monster. I think he’s an extremely dangerous character who plays around everything and cause trouble putting himself as well as others on the line. Just like Jin Kang said, he is a character that finds his humanity and warmth inside of himself that is not generalized, as the two begin to know about each other.”

“The Smile Has Left Your Eyes” will air its first episode on October 3rd.

What do you think of his apology?
