Famous Korean Actor Criticized For Simply Considering Upcoming Adaption Of Webtoon, Why Did It Happen?
Famous Actor Kim Nam Gil has effectively declined an offer to star in the drama adaptation of the webtoon “True Education,” but why did he get backlash for simply considering the drama?
On November 8, during a press conference for “The Fiery Priest 2,” Kim clarified his stance, stating that he initially rejected the project. “If a project makes many people uncomfortable,” he explained, “I think it’s right not to do it.”
Previously, a report had indicated that he was reconsidering the role, possibly due to the involvement of director Hong Jong Chan, known for works like “Juvenile Justice” and “Life.” However, Kim explained that his current commitment to “The Fiery Priest 2” has not allowed him time to fully review the script or address the issues surrounding the original webtoon.
“True Education” explores a fictional government agency responsible for maintaining teachers’ authority after a ban on corporal punishment. Despite its popularity, critics have called out scenes depicting violence and controversial social messages.
One particularly contentious moment involves a male protagonist “reprimanding” a feminist female teacher through physical aggression, while another includes a biracial character making derogatory remarks toward a Black student, which led to the webtoon’s removal from a North American platform in 2022. Nonetheless, it continues its publication in South Korea, albeit with certain episodes removed.
Kim also addressed fans’ concerns about his potential involvement on Instagram, emphasizing that, due to his current work commitments, he has not had time to make a final decision on any new projects.
Do you think Kim Nam Gil deserved backlash for considering “True Education”?
