Kim Jae Wook Finally Explains Why He’s Picky With His Projects And Why He Plays 2nd Lead Roles

Published Categorized as K-Dramas and K-Movies

At last, actor Kim Jae Wook explains his process of choosing work and why he usually takes on second lead roles instead of a well-deserved first lead role.

Kim Jae Wook recently participated in a photoshoot for “Esquire” in Paris, France. During the interview portion of the photoshoot, Kim Jae Wook candidly opened up about his career.

Kim Jae Wook said that he was taking a break after the success of “Her Private Life” to recharge.

Whats interesting was his take on drama projects and the criteria he uses to determine what type of project to accept or deny, he said,

“I have received many offers for main characters and commercial works, but I wasn’t attracted to them. I decided I wasn’t an actor with enough talent or experience to take on the lead role. So I wanted to play smaller roles first.

There is a saying that we should take the chance when we get it, but… in a way, I might have been stupid for not taking it. I don’t like that saying ‘strike when the iron is hot,’ I like to strike at my own time.”

Kim Jae Wook has been active since 2002, but as he said, he rarely took on first leading roles and instead opted for second lead roles in interesting projects. His first ever leading role in a romance comedy was in 2019 with “Her Private Life.”

Its not an underestimate to label Kim Jae Wook one of the most talented underrated actors but it seems that he chose to remain underrated in exchange for choosing projects that appealed to him.

My Personal Thoughts

Thank God we know at last, I’ve been complaining about his lack of appearances on TV for years.

If you follow my blog you know just how much I like his acting, I think he’s very underrated and I never understood why he wasn’t offered first lead roles, he usually plays the 2nd lead opposite less talented actors and that’s the tea.

He appears to be a chill person, I like his mindset but I can’t help but think he wasted his talent striking at his own pace. This is still his life and he’s the only who gets to decide what to do with it, but as fan, I would’ve loved to see him challenge himself even more with interesting projects as the lead because I know he can do it.

You can call me greedy but I really believe he could’ve surpassed Lee Min Ho and Kim Soo Hyun to the title of the hallyu star if he had put his mind to it, but he didn’t. There are many cliché stereotypical kdrama scripts out there but there are also some amazing scripts as well, you just have to look harder to find them. I can sense that he doesn’t really care about titles as much as he cares about the character he’ll play regardless of its position.

I still find his performance in “The Guest” one of the best of 2018; his performance in “Voice” was hauntingly beautiful. I really hope he takes on an OCN drama for his next role, something relating to psychological thrillers or horror, although, I highly doubt he’d be repetitive.

I’ll always be a fan of this chill hot man and I can’t wait for his next project.

Hi all, my name is Hilda and I am a huge kdrama fan, I am responsible for covering news in relation to Kdramas on My all time fav kdramas are: My Mister, Hotel Del Luna and Kill Me, Heal Me.

  1. Yesss…i have been a fan since coffee prince though, you can sense how desperate i am to see him as a main role. But now i know that he chose it that way, not because he is underrated. His projects always interesting in my eyes, he is one of the actors who seems to try on lots of different roles and challenge himself. I love it though i still want to see him moooooreeeee . He has charisma that is fatal and sexy as well as deadly. He will be the perfect actor in psychological thriller, thats why i love his act in voice. And her private life had me cringe all the time since its my first time to see him in lovey dovey scenes . But i love him anyway

  2. Oh I love this man! I was in Paris when he was doing this photo shoot and was so hoping I’d run into him but sadly I didn’t. I’ve loved all of his work and think he’s one of the most beautiful people ever. If he’s happy with taking so long to be a lead than I’m happy too, I just hope we get to see more!

  3. For me, personally, second leads in kdrama have always been the one to make an impact overall, throughout and till the end. So I’m glad he chose 2nd supporting lead instead of main lead till now, because as we all know, the main lead always getting the girl is very predictable, in kdramas atleast, which in turn cause me to focus more on the character’s around the main leads. The character he portrayed in “voice” was what attracted me the most. It was acted out perfectly, and he knows just how to lead the audience into feelings that drastically change from hatred to pity and sometimes, rightfulness.

  4. Finally I know the reason always waited for him to have a lead role. I hope he gets such lead roles that captivates him more and more often… Waiting for the next drama with kim jae wook in it…

  5. And I love him for that. He already gather respect and admiration without being 1st lead. To be honest, I dont like his latest romance drama with cliche story. It probably just… not my style of a drama. And I cant picture him in that role. But I will still support him.

  6. I Loved him Voice. He was AWESOME. But I fell in love with him even more in Her Private Life. That was fun to watch and see him in a different character. He was great. I know whatever he decides to do next will be even better because he’s so versatile as an actor.

  7. Me too IAM again to him since his role on coffee prince. And always adore and enjoy his acting. And his role on guest was amazing and his psycho acting on voice deserves all kind of rewards.
But woke he is a man only choose what fit his personality. Bravo that makes me love him more

  8. I’ve never known Kim Jae Wook until Her Private Life. I fell in love with his versatile acting and at the same time he’s talented! I hope we could see him more in doing lead roles for dramas. He deserve an award! Great acting for all his craft in TV!

  9. That’s what makes him so unique in his choices, he chooses parts that resonates with him & where he shines without trying.
Yes he is underrated as a actor, although those minor parts he portrays are amazing.
He still gets to travel & do the things he loves without being in the spotlight all the time I admire him for his choices & his individual taste’s. I love the way he’s not willing to give himself up completely to Stardom or letting it overcome his self or being able to achieve what he’d like to do or where he’d like to go.
An extremely amazing Man who’s interested in self worth & seeing this world at its best & worst
