JTBC’s “Lost” ratings are trending downwards, what happened?
JTBC’s “Lost” was considered one of the most anticipated kdramas of 2021, it boasts a star-studded cast featuring Jeon Do Yeon and Ryu Joon Yeol. Despite the hype and the cast, the drama has been seeing a decline in ratings since its first episode.
JTBC’s “Lost” premiered to a promising 4.2%, which was considered a great start, however, ever since, its ratings have been steadily declining. The 5th episode of JTBC’s “Lost” rated a mere 1.7%, its lowest thus far.
The drama airs in the primetime of Saturday-Sunday timeslot, but despite that, the drama has not been able to recover its first ratings.
Netizens are debating why the drama has failed to capture attention. Many believe the drama has a dark atmosphere and a slow pace. Added to that, some viewers talked about how the drama wasn’t easy to follow without paying close attention as it tends to convey its plot points through scenes rather than dialogues.
“Lost” focuses on telling stories of average people who realize they haven’t accomplished anything in their lives. Jeon Do Yeon plays the role of Boo Jung, a ghostwriter in her 40s who feels lost and as if she hasn’t been able to become anything. Ryu Jun Yeol plays the role of Kang Jae, a man who runs a service where employees act out whatever roles clients request, he’s afraid he might become a nobody.

I am currently watching this drama and mostly enjoying it.
Regarding the criticism, I agree with some of it. “Lost” is not a drama for everyone, to begin with. If you don’t like slow-paced realistic dramas that tackle heavy topics such as suicide, this will not be the one for you.
However, I really like the approach it takes, it doesn’t tell but shows, which is a landmark of a good script, show don’t tell. This is one of the basics you learn when you begin script-writing. It does take effort and patience to learn things but I’d say I am mostly liking it thus far.
The 5th episode was the weakest thus far, and the one that felt the longest without adding much to the conversation. Yet, I am not giving up on it because I see potential.
I just wish the drama wasn’t 16 episodes long. You would think they’d consider the length of the project because of the difficult topics it tackles, but apparently, it feels like they thought the star-studded cast could carry the drama through its somber theme.
It is too early to judge the drama. But I don’t hate what I see so far.
